Before computers, people who wanted to hear the backwards messages on records had to go through a lot of trouble to listen to them: Nailing phonographs upside down on the ceiling, flipping heads on tape decks, wearing headphones the wrong way 'round ...
Yet, in fact, all they needed to do was unplug the playback unit in question (8-track, "My 45" player, reel-to-reel etc), and reinsert the plug upside down, thus reversing the polarity of the AC current...
