Carlos Santana is one of my favorite musicians, his ability to play and sing so soulfully is amazing. By comparison I'm a hack, I'd hire out the vocals and just focus on playing the guitar. Guess that's why he makes the big bucks....is the first word of Santa's script.
You've got the theory name wrong - it's Any String Will Always Do, or ASWAD.

David Bowie started as a one man band. Because of the great difficulty of playing all the instruments simultaneously, he outsourced drums, guitar and bass and then keyboards. After he had outsourced all the musical instruments, he decided to also outsource vocals. The growing fan base thought that David Jones, the hired singer, was David Bowie. The outsourced band members and singer eventually realized that they didn't need David Bowie and fired him but never corrected the fans assumption that Jones was Bowie.

I outsourced my song writing to Rufus Wainwright, who outsourced it to Laura Viers, who outsourced it to Katie Melua, who outsourced it back to me. When I finally wrote a hit I had to pay 120% of the royalties. So I sued Melua, who sued Viers, who sued Wainwright, but somehow when I went to court I ended up suing myself.
