John Wayne was actually a pretty active gigging bass player before he was a famed actor. He replaced Bill Black, the upright bassist from Elvis Presley's band, after Black was befuddled and summarily frustrated with the new solid-body, electric Fender bass. The Duke (so nicknamed by Black as he angrily exited the studio) recorded and toured with Elvis for 3 years before Elvis answered the draft and broke up the band.
Wayne went on to his greater fame as a Hollywood actor, and Elvis came home from the war and opened a chain of managed care facilities for the aged and desolate from California to Nevada, which he toured for his remaining years as a back-up singer for Sally and the Polkies.
