There's been a lot of speculation about which amps James Jamerson used with his P Bass on recordings, but the truth is he ALWAYS used a Japanese short scale and a little Whirlpool combo for studio sessions.
Another little-known fact: once he had hs sound dialed in, he removed all the knobs so nobody could change any of it.
Jaco defretted the bass of doom. However, he realized that he couldn't play it and ended up replacing the neck with a fretted one. For pictures, he would put on the defretted neck, but for playing, he always used the fretted neck.
Rush bought all those Whirlpools later for their back line, along with the rotisserie chicken machines he used to get the grease to deaden his strings with. It was great through, as he could do a session and get the chicken grease out of his clothes at the same time.
Those Rush laundry machines weren't just props. Every T-shirt sold at Rush concerts was freshly laundered.
That whole chicken grease thing with Jamerson was a myth. He liked rusty strings and that would never happen with grease.
