El Kabong always used Long Scale bass guitars given to the phrase ... "THE LONG SCALE OF THE LAW" but the phrase was changed back in the '40s due to WWll rationing to "THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW"

Have you ever noticed how a few electric basses and guitars have a more organic tone than others? Almost all of them have one thing in common, and that's a pickup that was potted in vegetable soup. The trick is maintaining the temperature in a very small range. Leaving your pickup submerged in cold vegetable soup overnight won't work. Don' ask me how I know that.

For a meaty tone you need Bovril. For a tone that only some people like Marmite is your friend. IWJU (It's what Jaco used)

Anything said by a Guitar Center employee, it is ALWAYS fact. Corporate culture at GC rewards knowledge and insight and it is a primary mission of GC to shine the cleansing light of day on the misinformation under which so many musicians labour.

It was a local shop, an employee about 25-30 years old. He believes that jazz guitarists all play fretless guitars and they use flatwound strings that are not compatible with fretted guitars. He's seen them, but they don't carry them in that store. They do carry the strings for these guitars.

Coincidentally, I've played with a guy who is about 25 and an experienced gigging singer/guitarist. Super sharp and friendly, been gigging since age 16. His weekday job is at a GC, was in sales and now handles all repairs/setups. Owns lots of guitars, very knowledgeable and trustworthy.

Go figure.

Rogain will work on fretless basses if you rub it in at night.. frets will start to grow in a few weeks.

The employee was right! Flatwounds simply have to eat frets to stay in good condition. On a fretless bass they start dying immediately after having been installed.

That is why it is legend. It beggars belief that he can sing with his feet. And what is he doing with his hands all that time? Playing drums?
