Let's spread some musical misinformation

Debate rages about the purpose of silks on strings. Some posit that they are to protect hardware from scratches, as a branding exercise to identify strings, or other such nonsense.

But the reality is far more practical. First, silks prevent undertones, negating the need for high-pass filters. Second, they prevent overtones, negating dead spots on the neck.

If you have a dead spot on your bass neck, it is a result of using unsilked strings or strings with incorrect silks.

I only use spider silk heads on my drums. And silk snare wires make it sound invisible....You should hear it!...well, you can't but you should!

^^^The real reason is that silk is an Illuminati nod to MusicMan. The story I heard is that Leo Fender was always in drag at the MM factory wearing his famous silk stockings. So the workers called him "MusicMa'am" behind his back. You can easily confirm this if you Google "old man in stockings" on your work computer.
Is that where the term Fender Bender came from?

Instruments will receive new metric scale lengths. Basses will have a scale length of 1m (39 inches) and guitars a shorter scale of 0.5m. Upright basses will henceforth also have a 1m scale length to standardise this. 3/4 scale basses (75cm, or about 30 inches) will be allowed, so all your short-scalers were ahead of the curve. Grandfathering of old instruments will be allowed for pre-CBS Fenders, 1959 and earlier goldtop Gibsons and any owned by Eric Clapton because I don't like his music, I mean for the purposes of historical preservation. All other instruments must be turned in by the end of 2020 to: -asdfgh- Instrument Amnesty Services, Railway Cuttings, East Cheam.

More than half of all Luthiers are named Luther. Probably just a coincidence,

I had high hopes when the BBC announced the new drama series Luther; a maverick maker of stringed instruments who isn't afraid to break a few necks and put holes in bodies to get results and defeat the demons of the evil CNC.

You can imagine my disappointment when I watched the new BBC drama series Luther; a maverick cop who isn't afraid to break a few necks and put holes in bodies to get results and defeat the demons in his head (because he's got an ex-wife and his partner killed, the usuals). Although it did at least satisfy the acronym-anagram fans amongst us by making him a DCI in the CID.

DCI is Director for Creating Instruments. CID is Creative Instrument Designs, which is a bit like the ARM chip-designer and licences new designs to companies wanting to build something that doesn't look like a Precision of Jazz, and it's a pretty high-powered job, thinking out of the box and trying to see if basses that look like something even Salvador Dali wouldn't imagine will sell in the market place. Fender, Gibson and Rickenbacker use SOIA - Same Old Instruments Again, as their design method.

More than half of all Luthiers are named Luther. Probably just a coincidence,

Indeed, what Martin Luther nailed to a church door was actually a pattern for the Strat he wanted to make as he thought that the well-seasoned wooden door would make excellent tone wood, but someone took it as a religious tract while we went to get his saw to cut it out.

(Admission - a luthier friend of mine tried to buy a mahogany door on a building that was about to be demolished for similar reasons to the above)

Not musical info but, when it comes to anagrams, I'm a bit anal (I wish my name were Alan).

When the BBC's commissioner for drama saw the proposal and pilot script for Luther, with all the 'ex-wife problems, bends the rules, troubled dark thoughts, sexual tensions with nemesis, buddy partner to be killed off' tropes, he reportedly said "this idea's as cheap and cheesy as Aldi's Brie".

He was overruled and the show went ahead but he cleverly swung it that the lead role was played by Idris Elba, and Times crossword types quickly spotted the Aldi's Brie anagram. The buddy-partner role was originally a high profile signing of an ex-PM, but anagram fan Tony spotted "Blair Dies" and backed out.

Sorry, I've put the pencil back in its usual orifice - normal musical misinformation service resumes.

One of the reasons that MC Hammer went bankrupt after selling millions of records was that he invested in a Casino. While you may expect that to be a money maker, construction costs went through the roof as he insisted that all studs and joists used in the construction be made of mahogany which he considered the richest of the tone woods.
