Leo invented the 'Bass VI' for an early metal band that had progressively dropped its tunings so low the guitars were a full octave below standard. The guitar caught on with bassists but the matching octave down bass didn't catch on as the sounds created are only popular with whales. Boss did try to appeal to the whale market 15 years or so later with the OC-2.

Rudy Sarzo invented drop C tuning, but it never caught on in mainstream music.

He does use the tuning when playing Lady Gaga songs.

That's better than my ignorant thinking: I was under the impression that GAGA was the result of two tests to establish her vocal range. Fun fact (sorry it's not misinformation); if you play Lady Gaga's Bad Romance at 45rpm instead of 33rpm - not impossible on my CD player - that nonsensical Roma, roma, mamaa bit 30secs in, it turns out to be the chorus from Boney M's Ra-ra Rasputin. YouTube on x1.75 speed is nearly the same

If you want your bass to produce more harmonics, cut two tiny slits in the pickup(s), so an interference pattern will form.
