Delay was originally conceived to make guitars louder. It was thought that by reproducing the signal a second time, the guitar would be twice as loud. Unfortunately, in practice the idea fell apart. The problem being that guitar players don't understand how time works.

It's all about the speed (distance over time) of sound, depending on pressure, density and humidity. NOT mojo, you @#$%?!!
