An "Active bass" stands for an active/busy player = one who takes solos and fills and runs around the stage.

If you are a "rhythm section only" , low profile player , you should use a Passive bass.

Interesting cartoon. The violin headstock looks like an elephant with an earring, wearing an army helmet with antennae poking through the top. Interesting also because the Mafioso often carry saws in instrument cases (as they do guns) - guns to do the evil deed and saws to cut up the body after.
