Bass strings are of different diameters because they're filled with hydrogen, and some are inflated with more gas than others. That's why the strings are in the order they're in - the fatter strings float to the top when you hold the instrument. It's also why a right-handed bassist should never play a LH bass and vice versa, as the strings will get tangled up. And, of course, never smoke while playing with a pick, as hydrogen can escape and explode if you dig too deeply.
The holders for hamonicas around the neck were originally an early form of selfie stick back when you had to hold a camera absolutely still relative to your face for several seconds and your arm would get too tired if using an actual stick. When box brownies and film that could be exposed in an instant came in they were mostly repurposed for the use with the harmonica, although a few survived for use with Polaroids. The reason why you can't get harmonica holders now is they were last made in 1922 for those old cameras and stocks have now dwindled.

Banjos started out as "snare tambourine's" until someone noticed that if you tightened the individual snares to different tensions you could actually play something approximating notes.

By "quite well with it", you mean there is still a person that will speak to you. The fact that it is an accordion player is not material.
