Actually 'giving it some welly' derives from the early days of bass guitars, when the instruments had to be connected to mains electricity to work. Earth protection by wearing insulating footwear was essential for players, as the strings could become live at any moment. Some players experimented with wearing wellington boots on their hands; a few still adopt this now-obsolete precaution, as one can tell from the standard of their playing.
