Yeah really... I get all my bass sounds from my strings and fingers... and of course, the very special wood my bass is made of, and my amp, and room acoustics, and audience interpretation, and a bloated imagination of myself as an 'artist' changing the world of music with my very special sense of vapid banality...

....but... in all seriousness, yeah, the TFR is a serious muff variant, cross between an OD/distortion/fuzz... My personal favorite distortion pedal.
Then, there is the ever popular 'team awesome! fuzz machine'. Well deserving of the accolades it receives here. By itself, very angry and versatile. Sounds really neat pushed into an envelope/low-pass filter.
Last on my own list, but not at all least: Fairfield Circuitry Unpleasant Surprise. Amazing variations of fuzzy/bit-crushy goodness, but you'll need to parallel blend the signal to get the most out it and your low-end. I do, and it may just replace the tafm, maybe...

Id say you cant go wrong with a fuzz with a blend knob. Try the wren and cuff pickle pie b. Its my main fuzz pedal. The problem I have with the way huge swollen pickle is all that low end the pedal holds in makes me sound muddy in the band mix. the pickle pie b sounds very crisp and doesnt get muddy and the blend lets you bring your clean tone back in with fuzz on top it sounds great. try one you wont regret it.
Love my Russian Big Muff... I have a Swollen Pickle, EH Little Big Muff, Woolly Mammoth clone and the Russian muff is my favourite by far. Still many fuzzes I'd like to try though.

Fuzz is my favorite! but I always run it in a parallel channel. Blend knobs get you halfway there though.
I didn't like any of the way huge pedals. I felt they killed everything good about my tone. Honestly, though I keep buying fuzz pedals, I have a hard time finding something more usable than my Bass Big Muff Pi, with the blend/normal/bass boost switch. It sounds great set way back in my mix.
The other pedal I love is my Crowther Audio Prunes & Custard. Amazing sounds come out of this thing, but I really can't justify using it in a band setting. And somehow, I have two of them - ack!

I looked at (and played through) 30+ fuzz/distortion pedals. I ended up settling on two. One is the Way Huge Swollen Pickle and the other is the Malekko B:Assmaster. That's all I need.

Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B and a Blackout Musket are currently on my board. Both are varying flavors of a big muff based fuzz, and both sound great!

It's super versatile and the gate can be pretty awesome in the right settings. For getting funky, turn the gate and fuzz up and you've got an awesome synth sound. Turn them down and you've got a more usable Big Muff, with plenty of low end (separate volumes for clean & fuzz).
Getting a Prunes&Custard on Wed. Pretty excited for that.

i thought the Brown Dog had some ok sound in thar..... but it's just too damn finicky. one tiny knob bump (heh) while it's in the pedalboard case...... you get to start over. never clicked with it enough to want to figure out a good solution for that.
Personal opinion only in saying that I thought the Brown Dog was more trouble than it was worth. YMMV, etc...
Fuzz with a good tube head and overdrive pedal mixed with it are amazing sounding. On the most recent recording I was a part of, I played my Fender J through a DVK silver top, through a Redwitch Fuzz God, through my Ampeg CL-VR (channels bridged) and I couldn't be happier with the tone. Comes out more as an angry overdrive with a little extra, and doesn't lose the articulation of notes that I like for more technical styles as well. Not that it would have an application being used in a fast run, but when I did use it in a few 16th note runs it never had that 'wash' sound that most fuzz pedals I've played have had.
Although I like the sound of the pedal, I agree that it's way too sensitive. If you could save "presets" or something, I'd be a much happier man come gig night.
Just wanted to add the Prescription Electronics Depth Charge. I still have so many I want to try though...
