Lets Talk Fuzz.

Kinda torn between a cheap Woolly Mammoth clone and the EHX Deluxe Bass Muff Pi. Not sure I really need the clean blend on the fuzz because I have it in the FX loop of a filter that has a blend knob there. I like that thick and creamy fuzz but I like my harmonics to stay intact when I have my filter really wet. Does the Woolly fuzz have a lot of compression to it compared to a Russian Muff? I had and old Big Muff Pi from Russia and I didn't really like that it killed my dynamics. Sounded nice and low on the bottom end, but it was old and noisy and wasn't quite doing it for me anymore, so I sold it. I really miss having a fuzz now. 
If you want a pedal that will just straight up turn your bass into a plasma torch, get the Iron Ether Oxide. Zvex style gated fuzz on one side, Brassmaster style octave fuzz on the other, fully blendable. MUST MELT FACES!
If you want a Muff type fuzz, the SUF Civil Unrest has been catching my ear in demos lately. It's a Civil War Muff with an extra mids control to find your way through the mix.
If you're on a less than boutique budget, the Boss FZ-5 actually isn't a bad pedal. Three different fuzz flavors in one pedal, only $99 new and you can get them dirt cheap used.

Should I go for a dBBM to start with or go for something like woolly or animato clones??

What an old post by me in an old thread.
It's not the tubes that is blown in the Tube Zipper, it's the envelope filter circuit that is faulty and works quirky and weakly.
Other than that I pretty much stand by my post, even if I did sell my FZ7, as awesome as it sounded, since it made my bass tone really treblelly and thin.
Also I discovered since that a Boss MT-2 stacked in front of the EHX Tube Zipper sounds surprisingly awesome, pushing the Tube Zipper into over the top out of control fuzz territory and adding a ton of beautiful distorted harmonics.
Soon I'll be adding a Hartke HF44 Bass Fuzz, which has kind of a nasty harsh midrangy tone, you can hear in the Metal, Doom and Rock samples here: Invalid Link Removed
Finally at some point later this year I will get a Fender Blender clone, build by my electronic engineer freind.
The Fender Blender has this really unique over the top out of control nasty harsh ugly broken fuzz tone, I never heard the like of in any other pedal.
Truly unique sounding, although not for the faint hearted, but perfect for some nasty ugly fuzz noise making.
No, there are several types of fuzz tones pretty impossible to recreate with just one pedal, unless it has several circuits or is digital like the After Shock pedal that Source Audio makes.
Some has more usable tones in them than others though within their special territory.

I've tried most of the classic fuzzes and have found most wanting. So, I tend to use distortions. There aren't many original fuzz circuits being built these days, but there is one that has me lusting and that one is the Wizard Fuzz by Dunwich Amps. Invalid Link Removed

I just want to keep the amount of boxes down on the board and the chain simple and not go for digital multifx..
Uhm, where are you getting that from?
If you only want those two types of fuzz, buy two pedals that does that, but you didn't specify that in your post, I am not a mind reader you know.
I wouldn't go digital either, but what you asked for was an allround fuzz, and that is what I answered you on.
The only fuzz that would do that would be a digital one or one with several different fuzz circuits, as there are several different types of fuzzes and they all have pretty unique characters and tones, as I pretty much already stated in my last answer to you.
Almost as different as entirely different types of effects.
When that is said the Aftershock does a pretty good job emulating all kind of distortion and fuzz tones, from what I heard, and it wouldn't exactly be a digital multi effect, it's just one simple little box, that looks like a stomp box, you can use as standalone, or edit in the infinite via connecting it to a computer and edit it on the app....
As far as I know, not owning one myself, there's three different settings that is switched between by the flick of a knob on the stomp box.
You can't both wanting several completely different types of effects and at the same time wanting to keep the number of stomp boxes down to minimal, without going digital, simple as that.
It's common sense really.

personal opinion...No...get the ssbs TAFM or Mini for a more organic sounding either of those examples. But that just might be me not liking the word "engine" when it's applied to digital phenomena (After Shock) vs traditional diodes and circuits (TAFM). I think I hear a difference.
Sorry for not beïng very clear on explaining myself.. I'm fairly new to the pedalworld and a bit overwhelmed by whats on the market..

Man.... very impressive.. I like the mucho possebillitties on the After Shock...maybe to much to tweak about

I'm a fan of the darkglass duality.
The filter is awesome and works like a LPF which allows you to dial out high frequencies that are harsh which is a lifesaver if you run direct to foh.
I like being able to mix the two fuzz circuits with each other and with the clean tone. It retains low end very well and plays nicely with a variety of basses including active basses.
My only real complaint is the power jack location. But I'm assuming it's where it is because this pedal has so much crammed into a small pedal.
