Line 6 HX Effects

Ok I just ordered a HX Effects. I plan to shrink my pedalboard down to the hx efx with expression, future impact, and possibly a bass wah if I dont like the expression. is anyone in here using the hx fx to control the future impact? how does it work for you?

See my post here.

I'm only doing basic on/off and program changes with the FI, but that's currently all I've needed to do.

Future Impact into Plus in one loop, Chromatron (with Octabvre and Doom in its own FX loop) in the other. Everything is powered by the Zuma R300, and I got it to fit on a Novo 18!

I've noticed a strange problem with my HX at home (Haven't noticed it on gigs but I'm not sure).
I usually am in stompbox mode. But after I'm in the mode for a few (5-15) seconds, the HX reacts as if I momentarily touched one of the switches - it switches to showing the parameters for one particular effect (I don't know if it's always the same one, but I think so). The sound doesn't change, just the display.

In addition, I have my MBD-1 in one of the HX effects loops, and to begin with it seemed totally transparent (the loop bypass sounded the same as the MBD bypassed but in the loop). Now, I can hear an eq difference between the two. This seems to have started about the same time as the other problem. It doesn't really bother me, but the fact that it has changed is a bit weird.

Everything on my board is powered by a Voodoo Lab PP2+, with each effect on its own isolated output.

So even the HX is being powered off the PP2???

Ah, yeah I was going to say it's probably the PP2. But Idk. I know I've had my HX do weird things like that from time to time but doesn't happen often and normally won't repeat enough for me to be concerned or say anything about it here.
Yeah this was so bad the other day that editing was difficult. I’d make a change, try it out, and the screen would reconfigure itself so I couldn’t tell where I was. Over and over. I hope my HX isn’t going south.

Try turning off the touch mode for the switches. Something conductive might be touching a switch. For the loop issue check if the loop is set to to line or instrument level.

I've done a brief search, but I figured someone here might know the answer, so here goes!

Just got the HX effects, and I really dig it. It allowed me to shrink my footprint while having the same sounds I had before. I'm using it with several external pedals, but the 2 I'm focusing on are a Future Impact and Source Audio Manta w/Hub. I've already got things set up so that I have separate patches on the HX for the sounds I need from either pedal, so I can hit Mode, and be in Bank mode, then hit a patch switch (one of the 4 visible in Bank mode), and, through MIDI, pull up the correct patch, and turn either pedal on or off, using multiple Instant commands. I have both pedals running through Effect Loop 1, and rarely/never use both pedals simultaneously, so being able to turn them on and off independently is a must.

I'm curious to see if there is a way to set up one patch on the HX in Stomp mode, and program it to allow this control on each footswitch? Simply put, I'll have, say, Patch 5A on the HX be 6 different settings for either the Manta or FI. Hitting a footswitch would then choose the correct patch on either pedal, and turn it on, then hitting the footswitch again would turn it off. I see that MIDI can be assigned to each footswitch, but, even in HX Edit, it looks like I'm limited to one command per footswitch, unless I'm missing something. I may be asking this to do too much, but it's something I've toyed around with in my mind, but I'm still new enough to the MIDI thing to not know exactly what to do. Any and all help is appreciated!!

You're 100% correct. Each switch can only be assigned to send one MIDI command at a time. You would just have to be very deliberate in your planning with separate presets and utilizing the 6 "instant" commands that can be sent at preset recall.

It's unfortunate, Line 6 really tried to bill the HX as a do-it-all brain for a fully featured pedal board. For some that's true, but Line 6 seems to be operating under the assumption that most people are really only going to be using 0-1 MIDI pedals in conjunction with the HX. I guess cause they think most people will just use the HX to replace those other MIDI pedals they were using before? I don't know, I'm only speculating. I sort of think the MIDI stuff on the HX is an after thought.

Perhaps there's a reason they limited the HX to 1 MIDI command per switch, but I can't personally see why. I had a Boss ES8 previously, and while that thing was definitely overkill for my uses, it had some serious MIDI programming capabilities. Each switch could send many MIDI messages at once. I don't actually know what the limit was.

@NicJimBass I think you'd benefit from using something like the Morningstar MC6 pedal. That thing could control your HX, Manta and FI. I'm considering one down the road if I get more into the MIDI thing.

Thank you for the clarification!

My MIDI needs aren't really all that involved, and I've got it set up to where it will work well for my situation, but I'm always looking for a better way to do things. I came from a Joyo PXL-Live, where I could hit a loop button, and send a MIDI signal to control the patch, so it was doing essentially the same thing, except I didn't need to worry about turning an effect on or off (they mostly stayed on), outside of turning it's individual loop on or off.

I have looked at the Morningstar stuff, and coming from the Joyo, it would keep a lot of the same functionality, but I think I'm good where I'm at (for now). I had to plan, then re-plan, then plan again, to get the layout on my new board to be what I need, and still fit inside the available real-estate, so I'm really land-locked at this point. I guess I can always go back to my PT-Pro if absolutely need be. :)

Nice setup! How many of the extra pedals are in the loops of the HX?

Signal goes- X2 Wireless > HX effects (Loop 1- Manta, FI, both controlled by MIDI, Loop 2- BSW) > OC-2 > Alpha Omicron > MXR Bass Comp > Turbo Tuner > Radial JDI. All but the HX powered by a Voodoo Lab 4x4, with most outlets still open (use one 400mA out for the Manta and BSW, and one for everything else, using a Truetone daisy chain).

I have the Manta and FI in loop 1, and the Digitech BSW in loop 2, as I only use it for one specific song, and don't really want it in my signal chain all the time, lol.

Yeah, the BSW is such a strange pedal. Cool sounds with so little control over its volume.

Love the label on the octave 2 knob on the OC2.

I'm using the FI with the HX too in loop 2. I have a single preset for it. Sends an "on" message and a PC message for the FI preset I use most frequently. Then on the HX preset I have the top 3 switches set to send preset changes to the FI for the 3 sounds I use on it. Not currently using the FI in conjunction with any other effects on the HX. Someday when I have time...

I literally use it for one song- Pony, by Ginuwine. It's not perfect, but close enough, and I've yet to find another pedal that does it better. I've not had an issue with it's volume, but, you could control it with the HX, so it seems. There are levels for both input and output.

I put that on there before I desoldered the pot from the board, allowing the other 2 signals to be louder, but left it there, cuz it's funny.

That would make more sense for a single patch of just FI sounds, if it had it's own loop. I may keep that in mind in the future!
