Line 6 HX Effects

Updated to 2.80.1 today. For me at least, the process was smooth and easy. Haven't had time to use any of the new effects or features.

It was not at all straightforward for me.

With Windows 10, I installed the driver, then installed the Line6 Updater. The Updater runs, but every time it detects the device via USB, it crashes, i.e. plug in the USB and the Updater will crash. If the USB is already connected, the Update won't run. I could not find a remedy.

So I tried Mac OS. First, a Mac Book Pro that's maybe six years old. The Updater won't install at all. Indefinitely gets stuck on "verifying package"...

Finally, I used another family member's more recent Mac Pro, and it was indeed straightforward with that system. Although Apple doesn't have a USB port on this machine, which makes me want to honk the nose of an Apple VP of Product Management. Really hard. Had to track down an adapter. Of course, this has nothing to do with the Line6 :-)

Hopefully, I won't be wasting any more time on solving mundane tech problems with this thing. I have enough of that crapolo in my life, and I'm loathe to see it creeping over into my music hobby. But I guess that's where things are headed.

Did the update yesterday and fidddled around with my two most-used patches on the SansAmp.

The HX model reacts a bit different at lower playing volumes (less dynamics, playing soft is already quite loud/driven) but at medium to really-diggin'-in playing it sounds 95% the same to me. Best test is always on stage off course.

Hey guys, to anyone using the source audio ecosystem in conjunction with the HX for midi and the source audio HUB, how are you guys running them all together? Like to change presets on them? Like, I want to hook the HUB up to the HX. What cable(s) would I need?

I’m just kinda lost atm with the midi stuff and seeing how to control all this stuff together.

Standard MIDI cable from HX midi out to Hub midi in. Program what you need from the Command Center in the HX settings. Each preset can send up 6 instant commands when recalled, and each foot switch can be programmed to send one command each.

Updated to 2.80.1 last night. Sansamp compared to my B7K sounds is so much more my bag, to the point I'm going to set the sansamp as my core tone and use the B7K's greater tweatability for different drive sounds. Scrambler not really done it for me in early testing.

I've unusually got a little pedal money burning a hole in my pocket, but struggling to think of something affordable that the HXe doesn't quite nail. Maybe a fuzz/muff? What have others got on their boards in this regard?
I've so far thought about the COG Tarkin/Knightfall 66, EHX sovtek deluxe muff, EQD Hoof.
Or maybe some kind of delay/looper? I'd love the chase bliss Mood but that's a little too expensive...

You like synths at all? I couldn't recommend the SA C4 atm. It's all the rage since it's release. I added one to my board and it's insanely good IMO. I found the muff sounds I got from the HX are more than sufficient. Great actually. Obviously there are plenty of other flavors to choose from, but I A/B'd the green Russian reissue and the HX muff and I got extremely close to each other.

Today, the HXFX was a life-saver for me. In my main band, we tune down two full steps, so my bass is tuned, low to high, G C F Bb Eb. Setting up my gear for rehearsal, I realized I had brought the wrong bass, in standard tuning . Fortunately, I was able to just dial in the HXFX pitch shifter in front of my chain, and proceed as if nothing happened. The tone was perhaps not quite what it used to be, but I got through rehearsal just fine!

I'm contemplating getting a Helix Effects but have a few things I want to clear up that weren't entirely clear from reading the owner's manual.

First, if I plug into both the L and R inputs (I have a bass wired to output each of the two pickups to separate channels, similar to Rick-O-Sound), can I create separate effect paths for each input simultaneously? For example, have a distortion on the L and compressor on the R. And if so can it keep those channels separate and output each to the L and R outputs?

Second, and this one I'm pretty sure of but I want to make certain, if I plug in one mono jack can the Helix split that with a crossover effect into two signal paths and then apply different effects simultaneously to each path? For example, distortion to the highs and compressions to the lows?

Finally, with parallel signal paths is there a limit to the number of effects that can be applied to each signal path?

Thanks!

I know your second question is a most def YES. It can do all that.

I want to say yes to the first question as well. I think you can control what happens to those ins and out through the globals menus and how they react when you plug whatever into them. So I'm pretty sure that's a yes as well. But if no one answers for sure within the next hour or so, I'll try it when I get home and let you know for sure.

For your 1st question, if you can't use the input for some reason, you can use an effect loop. Plug signal b into the return of the loop and use the return patch and put the loop in the parallel chain to the main
