Line 6 HX Effects

The brief playing I did with the bitcrusher, it mainly seemed to add white noise. I didn't hear much of that cool off-pitched aliasing crunch. Do you have settings I could try?

Not really. I just messed with it briefly. It just seemed like a huge beefy noisy fuzz to me. With a bitcrusher type sound to it. It’s not like most other bitcrusjers I’ve played. But then again, it’s not like I’ve played a lot of them it begin with so my opinion isn’t all that great.

Got some schwag for my HX. I’ll most likely be reapplying the scribble covers with some thinner double sided tape. But this’ll do for now.

What are you using for scribble covers?

I think it’s just plexi. Here is the site for them. They came with some double sided clear tape. I should’ve made smaller pieces and cut them better in hindsight. It looks better now that I got some of the excess gunk outta there. I like them. I feel like it makes the unit look more solid. Not that it didn’t look solid before. Idk, I just like mods and custom stuff :D

This link actually takes you straight to PayPal for the HX ones. I don’t think he’s got his “HX” section up and running just yet.

I've now been trying that thing out for couple of hours. So far I like it very much. Sound quality is really really good. Before I wrap my head around the rack version I'll keep on messing with it. However, one thing that does it all kind of appeals to me. I've had the TC G-System and the AxeFXII and still have the M9 and the H9. All great products, but the user interface of the Line6 is just way better. Really intuitive.

However, I've got a couple of questions:

HX Edit doesn't work with OSX 10.9 (Mavericks). Is it me or is this really the case?

I really like the snapshot feature. I understand it as a preset within a preset (Fractal Audio calls this "Scenes"). Is there a chance to have more than those four snapshots? Like all six without the bank up and bank down? Do the full Helix products have more snaps?

Are there no IR's loaded in stock? I choose one and nothing happens. No alteration of tone.

One routing problem (without the Edit): I'd like to have a parallel routing with the merging not all the way at the end, but before the Looper. Somehow this wasn't possible. When I picked the first in line and put it to path B, it then splitted right before the very first block and stayed there. I couldn't make it that there was a block in front of the splitting, which made me start all over.

The expression options are great. The FV-500 works pretty well I think.
I there an option where I could use it only for some parameters of the active effects? I noticed that it also changes values of effects that are not active. I still need to wrap my head around how I will feed my need of tweaking effects on the fly. This is great live, but also for rehearsal and quickly adjust some things. The hands-free move Line6 made is simply amazing. However, it often jumped back to zero (bug). Dunno, I'm still riding with 2.4 or so since I cannot update poopie. We'll see.

I just keep on praising. The routing, the effects and the user interface are simply amazing. No comparison to what I've used so far. Pod has also no chance.

This is what it looks so far. Stageclix Jack into the HX, then the path B goes after a compressor out via Send 1 into the Subway, into poweramp and then into 212. The normal HX output goes to the poweramp and into a 112. My goal is a nice compact bi amping setup.

There is an IR loaded in there but it's weird. Not very good IMO.

I'm still struggling trying to understand the snapshots. I just can't seem to wrap my feeble brain around the concept.

The routing, where the merger is, you can move that. I know I can on mine. If we're talking about the same thing....

Just wait till you go to 2.50. And I know I've had mine close to a month now is it? I'm still praising it. It's like it just kept getting better and better the more I messed with it, discovered and got better at using it. Plus I just leep messing with it. This is easily one of the coolest, most fun pedals I've ever had.

A snapshot is essentially a selection of effects within your presets. This way there is no latency compared to when you have to load a new preset.

So if we have blocks 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the preset. Snapshot 1 could be block 1 and 3 active, snapshot 2 block 2 and 3 and so on. Then you can also change settings. This is nice to try out different compressor settings for instance. Just create four snapshots with everything the same but the compressor setting. Then you can switch inbetween these settings very quickly.
To use it in that way you have to make that the four visible snapshots don't disappear after selecting one. Then you have your four presets within one presets which switch seamless. Nice.

Update to 2.5 worked. I seemed to have taken the wrong Line6 Updater (or the right one wasn't available before).

Edit: There seems to be no HX Edit available for OSX Mavericks. Maybe later I hope...

Congratulations! Sounds you really jumped in there, I haven’t tried snapshots yet.

HX Edit works fine for me on OSX 10.10.5 (Yosemite). Not sure about Mavericks.

Good post.
I couldn´t test the Bass Octaver on my M13 last weekend. Hopefully will do it this sunday.

Regarding the OC2 issue, OCT-1 sound like a square wave on a synth... I got better results using just the Pitch Glide in -12, but i guess i should try to add some Ring Modulator or one of the synths to make it sound more like the original OC2...

Thanks, and interesting idea about adding a ring mod. I tried adding a mild chorus and it sounded fairly convincing, I'll be interested to try a light ring mod in it's place at my next chance.

Agreed on sound quality and programming, blows any previous multi I've tried right out of the water, and compares really well to individual pedals!

I agree with @gregmon79 on IRs as well. Haven't even bothered with the factory IRs. But I "impulse" purchased (see what I did there? HA HA HA :roflmao: ) the Red Wirez IR libraries for the Hartke 4.5XL, Ampeg B15 and Aguilar DB115 today. Holy bejeebers there's a lot of files... four sample rates, two bit rates per sample rate, 15 mics per sample rate and 36 IRs per mic. :wideyed: Will hopefully have a chance to mess around with some of them tonight!

Regarding expression control: If it's effecting things that aren't active, that probably means you have the inactive effect assigned to the same expression controller. (i.e. Block #1 and Block #2 both have parameters assigned to Expression 1). Interesting that Line 6 would have it programmed to effect the inactive block as well. Hmmmm. Not sure how to solve that aside from having a 2nd Exp controller and assign the separate pedals to the separate blocks.

I'm still struggling trying to understand the snapshots. I just can't seem to wrap my feeble brain around the concept.

To expand on what Gregmon said about routing... Once you have the paths split, you can select the split/merge points just like a block and move them around to where you want them to be in the chain.

I've only recently started exploring Snapshots, and find myself struggling with it a little as well. I get the concept, but a wondering if maybe I'm doing something wrong. In my main patch, I'd like to have an UP Auto Filter on Snapshot 1, but a DOWN Auto Filter on Snapshot 2. I'm not changing any of the blocks, but when I change the setting on the Auto Filter to DOWN, it changes Snapshot 1 as well. I've consulted the manual, but I must just be missing something. I only messed with Snapshots briefly, and it was at the end of a long day... "Meh, I'll figure it out later!" :meh: ha ha

Another +1 for how cool the HX is. It's pretty much changed my upcoming board build plans, and has inspired me to clean out the effects bin... I've got a BUNCH of effects stuff that will be going up for sale. Quite refreshing!

They said that the HX Edit won’t be fully released until spring. Or they’re shooting for spring anyway. Hopefully that’ll take care of it then. I know it’s nice to have what it offers now but I’m excited to see what the full version brings.

The snapshot parameters got me me as well for a while. It's a bit tricky. You have to push the knob for a little while when you start turning it, then a notch will appear on the parameter display. That's the value for the snapshot, otherwise you're changing the value for the whole patch. Also, don't keep pushing the knob as it will go into controller assign mode. So brief push and turn at the same time, then adjust normally.

Having come from an AxeFXII for a few years, yes, a HX "snapshot" is basically the equivalent of "scenes". My understanding is it mitigates/removes the slight change in sound from moving between two patches.

Did you happen to see @fivestringgecko 's post about the octaves here? It's pretty in depth.

Thanks for the nod, @gregmon79! That Octaver comparison is located here.

Thanks for the tip! I read something about pushing the knob in the manual, but I wasn't quite wrapping my head around it. I'll give it a try tonight, hopefully. I played with a couple of the Red Wirez IRs and then got sidetracked working on patches for my band (including a killer down envelope like Paul Turner's live sound for Love With A Little L, an almost spot on match for Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, and a pretty reasonable Ain't Nobody :bassist: ).

So yeah: Played with the Red Wirez IRs for a bit last night... I tried three different mic impulses each for the Ampeg B15, Aguilar DB115 and Hartke 4.5XL model.

For anyone thinking about the Red Wirez Hartke 4.5XL IR library, be aware that they did separate impulses for the 10" and 5" drivers. I had a located here. cab for while, and I regularly turned the horn off because that cab was REALLY bright. I was hoping for the Hartke bright, loud punch so I could use it with the 80's band I play for that uses in-ear monitors, but the Hartke IR of just one of the 10" drivers didn't really convey that. Since the 5" driver was impulsed separately, I'm now wondering if I'd have to load two IRs to get the "full cab" experience. Fine in a studio where you're not limited, but I'd rather not take two blocks on the HX for it.

I've never actually owned a B15, but have played a couple, and I did think the B15 impulse sounded pretty good compared to the sound in my memory banks. Seems like a pretty decent sound that I'll definitely experiment with further, particularly when I'm using my P Bass with flats.

The Aguilar IR didn't seem all that different from the Ampeg IR. Maybe just "B15 with a slightly different flavor." Not the best description, but that's the best that comes to mind.

For now, I'll leave it at "Further exploration is required."

You know that's a really cool idea. Make multiple blocks of IR's, all different placed ones, and see if you can get a cool sound out of that. Talk about endless experimentation.
