Line 6 HX Effects

I just caught up with you guys! I purchased an HX a few weeks ago. It is pretty much exactly what I was looking for!

It's interesting seeing people get the HX, falling in love with the sounds and format, and then seeing themselves upgrading to the big brothers later.

I'm coming at it from the opposite end. I started this multi-effect quest with an FX8 (which did not last long!....UI to me was very cumbersome) Then I jumped to the LT. I loved it! Tons of options and a wonderful user interface. It filled in so many gaps in my board (as others have said for effects they still need but seldom use) But it is large!!! And I still love acquiring the occasional new pedal. So I was like "man, if they just had tons of effects in a smaller box that I can add to my existing board, that would be great!"

And so they did.

And it has been good. I too am going through the process of seeing what to keep and what to sell. The great thing about the effects on the HX is that they are mostly all acceptable in a live playing environment. I could easily see bringing my cali compressor and Noble bass preamp and having a nice little fly rig.

With that being said, my breakdown of the HX effects are as follows:

Fantastic!:
Overdrives, Modulation, and Delays- I have had all of the Strymon and Eventide at this point and have no problem shedding them for the effects in HX. Having had several iterations of Darkglassdom, the HX does a wonderful job of getting close. The delays are very usable and good. The modulation is what really impressed me. WAY better than most of Eventide's and not quite as glassy as the Strymon Mobius. They just feel more authentic.

Totally usable but I prefer the real thing:
Octave
Synthy pedals
Filter effects
Compressors

Others have said it. There is just something about an analog octaves and filters. Playing out with these live I wouldn't have any issues. The compressors are actually really dang good but I love my Cali76. Haven't played with the synth stuff that much and admittingly the music I play doesn't often call for those when playing out.

The weakest link:
The reverbs. I will preface this by saying 2 things:
1. I am a reverb snob.
2. The Helix new reverbs are much better than their preexisting algorithms.

That being said...I have found reverb love in the form of the Source Audio Ventris and it will be doing all my heavy lifting. I just haven't found better room and spring emulation in other pedals at this point including the Strymon Big Sky which was the front runner for a long time....and I have literally been through everything that has reverb attached to its name.

So, but that is the beauty of this thing. You keep the HX for all kinds of things but it is small enough that you can afford to keep some of your passions on the pedalboard AND still be part of the Helix family. Everybody has something they value...overdrives....special fuzzes...ambient effects, and this solution allows for the best of both world while keeping a fairly small footprint.

So far I have figured out that I will be keeping:
1. Noble Bass preamp
2. Cali76 CB compressor
3. Cog t-16 octave
4. Banana Effects Matryoshka synth pedal
5. H9 max
6. Source Audio Ventris Reverb

Things leaving:
1. Darkglass pedals
2. Strymon stuff
3. Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl Hi-Fi
4. Orange Getaway Driver Overdrive
5. Not sure on my Spaceman Titan II Fuzz yet

Weird things I still want to fill in sounds now that most of the Basics are covered by the HX and the pedals I'm keeping:
1. Chase Bliss Thermae harmonizing delay
2. Chase Bliss Condor eq/filter
3. Perhaps getting back a small bass wah like the Chi Wah pedal
4. Possibly the new Origin Overdrive once they come out with the bass version simply because I am a fanboy.
5. Some kind of expression pedal.

I should say I have been running 2 amps at this point for a Wet/Dry setup and it is amazing!

My dry sound is Cali76--Noble Pre--Phil Jones PB100 powered cab

Most of my pedals go into my wet amp which is a Darkglass 900----AudioKinesis Hathor 1203 cabinet

The phil jones is small and does not get super loud but it does just give me that extra dry sound that makes all the Reverb's and delays coming from my wet amp sound so 3 dimensional! I highly recommend it! The Noble allows my to run a juicy dry signal to the board and now I just have to figure out something to send the wet signal out of. I was thinking this:

Helix plus a Cali76 is an amazing combo. I run my Cali76 TX into the helix floor and it sounds incredible. Compressors on the helix are pretty good overall, but I really like having the gain reduction metering.

How do you like the PB100, and do you think it could pair well with the helix? Most places just take a DI and I don't want to haul my 60lb 500w bass amp just to use as a monitor. I've been looking to get something small and lightweight to use just for stage sound for me.

Calis are beautiful. One of my biggest regrets was selling my Cali76 TX, but in my ever-evolving quest to have both the smallest and most powerful rig I can have, I sold that for the compact bass. The CB is still one of the best compressors I've ever had but the TX just had mojo!

The pb-100 is very nice. It is perfect for a Helix type setup because whatever you give it, you get back. It is not loud though at all. I play with a very dynamic drummer and that pushes this little combo to the max where if he was playing much louder I would need something more powerful. The reason it works so well in my setup is because my Darkglass amp and Harbor cab are doing most of the heavy lifting, I am just using the pb-100 to give my dry sound that extra little oomph. It really does make your effects sound so much better and more immersive when you have a separate cab for them to run out of while having something to keep your fundamental bass tone. Yes, I know effects have blends so you can control the amount of wet you are putting in, but it definitely does not sound the same to me!

I agree with you. Dry signal into one amp and wet signal into second amp sounded way better than blended dry signal into 2 amps. It seemed to add way more definition and grunt at low to med gain settings on my B7K into 2 Traynor SB115's.

1spot pro CS6 is great, have it mounted under my small sideboard (Pedaltrain Metro 16) for the helix. My small sideboard is my practice rig, since my band practices at a studio that provides practice rooms with full drum kits and guitar/bass backlines. I also run it into the front of the helix for my gig rig. Sideboard is tuner -> digitech drop -> Cali76 TX -> Sansamp. Digitech drop lets me take only one bass to rehearsal on public transit, which is huge. The only change for gigs is I go into the helix out of the Cali76, and keep the sansamp as my backup rig. I've been considering getting a HX to use as my practice rig and use the full helix for gigs, but thats just an idea I'm floating around. The downside is the HX and Cali76 are both so big I wouldn't be able to fit both, so I'd probably sell the sansamp and use HX, digitech drop and tuner as the practice rig, then put the cali76 in instead of the HX for gigs. Downside is I'd lose the sansamp backup. Still deciding exactly how I want to handle the side rig.

And hey, this is great news! I’ll have to dig my converter plugs out tomorrow, see what this is about. However, they didn’t test this on a pedalboard full of pedals to see how it would sound.....I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that it most likely will sound noisy if not not that great. Could be wrong. I guess I’ll try it out tomorrow. If this really works, that would be quite aweome since I have 2 CS7’s under my board. I’m skeptical atm. We’ll see I guess....

Thanks for sharing!!!

Hey everyone, I'm pretty keen on one of these to replace my idea of using two H9s especially since @gregmon79 got rid of a lot because of the HX.

I only have a couple of questions;

Can it run two delays and reverbs in the same patch, I won't use them at the same time but I do want the trails to continue on.
Can the tremolo be super Juan Alderete choppy?
Is the ring mod/bit crusher any good, tbh I've never used them but I've almost finished my synth bass pedal board setup and have those options would be amazing, especially with a blend.
Ohh and how does the routing work, is it just straight or can you do Helix type blending?

Cheers, Sam.

You can run any number of the same effect up to 9 until the DSP can handle it. So far I haven't run out of DSP yet. :)
I only messed around with the basic tremolo, but it can go 100% depth (basically a rythmic gate), and you can tweak the duty cycle as well if you want really staccato notes.

I haven't tried the ring mod/bc yet, but I'm planning to go down to our rehearsal space this afternoon, I'll try to remember the check those out as well. :)

The routing is really flexible. Basically you have a stereo path which you can split to create another stereo path. Split point and return mixer can be placed anywhere and you have a bunch of options for the split type and the mixer as well. So like the Helix, but you only get one path to split.

Aren't the one spots isolated power supplies? My understanding is they are, so they should be noiseless, regardless of the number of pedals.

Yes, you can def do that. As long as you don’t go over the DSP load or whatever you’d call it. Like Moak said.

Yes, the trems can be choppy like a helicopter. I look for that Juan A type trem in a trem as well. And the trems in the HX can do that and sound beautiful imo.

I dig the ring mod. The HX replaces my moog ring which again, I really liked. It’s got more parameters to tweak too. The HX does I mean.

True. But if you still underpower a pedal like
The HX it could still create noise. A lot of it sometimes. We’ll see what happens. I’m about to try it.

@gregmon79 is there anything that can get me close to a tone like the MBD-1?

Hate/like to say it, nothing can replicate the MBD1. I mean, you can get close with a couple of the models in the HX. And I’m sure if you added some eq you may be able to get closer with one or two of the dirt models. But the feel and presence of the MBD1 in a mix is unmistakable IME. Even if i decided to remove some dirt in lieu of the HX, the MBD1 will not be going anywhere.

Now that’s not to say that I think the OD’s in the HX aren’t good. I think they’re all pretty awesome. I just happen to think very highly of the MBD1. It was a game changer for me. And still kinda is.

Since the regular one spot wall wart puts out 1200mA, that implies the cheapo one spot can power the HX fine.

Yes...?

@Digital Igloo ?

I would think so providing one spot comes with adapters which I think it does.

So, it works!!!!! I kinda can’t believe there is no extra noise introduced. So far. So so far so good. I’m gonna mess with it today, mess with a lot of blocks, models and features to make sure it’s powering it solidly. But damn, just another reason to be glad I have Truetone power underneath.
