Line 6 M9 & M13 Club

if this is the best place to ask but there are hundreds of M9/M13 forums through search.

I am looking to buy an M9 and want to know how easy it is to start using. Is it plug and play or do I have to download software and spend a ton of time on the manual?

I'm not lazy, but I'm hoping there is ease of use for bass as this is first a guitar effects box, right?

If all goes well, I may be asking for a number soon. :)

You can use an M9 right out of the box. Connect it like any effect and start playing. As was said, very easy to access the basic functionality and models.

That said, a quick review of the Pilot's Handbook (short and to-the-point) will enhance your experience. You can view it here if you want to get a head start! ;)

The firmware/software was updated to add some new models and features, including some bass specific ones, like a bass octaver. If you buy one that does not have the new firmware on it, you will probably want to upgrade the firmware. You will need a midi cable to update your M9. The update is NOT required to use your M9 right away.

It can go either way, you can make a few tweaks and get playing, or you can dive in and really get involved with settings and scenes and what not.

The only thing that's really necessary is to upgrade to firmware 2.1 (or is it 2.0?) b/c there is a lot in that update that expand the M9 & M13 for bass. It was not a big deal to update, it took me all of ten minutes, from plugging into the PC to unplugging from the PC.

Currently debating whether to get the M9 or M13. Currently I don't even have any effects and initially won't need a whole lot of presets so I was going to go with the M9. Then someone told me in another thread "The M13 is a better buy than the M9 as with a Boss LS-2 you can get it to parallel process". Why is this important and what will it do for me?

I bought the M13, even though I don't use a lot of effects, because I wanted the possible 4 effects at a time rather then the 3, the effects loop option, and easier to change scenes and get into the looper mode. My thoughts were that if I wanted to use either a comp or EQ, that would take up 1 of the 3 on the M9, so I would go for the M13, even though I didn't need 3 options for each of the 4 possible "ON's" at one time.

I use only the M13 and I love it! Owned mine since October of 2009. Can I gets me some number action? and a question directed at RichRenkin: any chance you guys could work a Strobe Tuner into the M13? I think that would be an AWESOME addition to the unit. And maybe a "DEEP IMPACT" inspired pedal?

Hah well I don't know if I could sell you on the feature with the ways I would use it because you may have different ideas for effects you'd run parallel.
Octave tone parallel to filtered tone.
Octave tone parallel to filtered modulated tone.
Octave tone parallel to a subtle overdriven tone.
Subtle overdriven tone parallel to phaser and flanger tones.
Phaser parallel to flanger.
Phaser parallel to thick chorus.

Mostly just tones involving subtle grit or filters or different subtle modulation.
I just wonder how well the filters and EQ's work with bass, and I've already got a compressor and two fuzz boxes that do what I need.
I know I'd play with different presets at home for hours, and possible software updates are very appealing. I'm so glad that I'm not getting paid for another 9 days because if I had the money I'd probably order an M13 from someplace tonight.
