Live from Daryl's House

Hey, my mind is totally open and I love any kind of music as long as it's played well.
As for Cee-lo, there is just something about him that rubs me the wrong way, can't put my
finger on it, be it his pretentousness or inflated ego? I don't know but why force myself to like
him when there are 1000's of other great singers to admire.
Trust me, he'll still make this month's rent with out me buying his songs.
Totally with you on that!

Did you watch it? :eyebrow:

If so, cool. If not, give a go, then jump back to this opinion if you want to. It makes it more valid. I don't like a lot of what I heard from Hall and Oats, but seeing this show has forced me to re-examine my opinion of them and the players involved. That's what's cool about music. If you keep an open mind, it keeps surprising you.

I only ask because... if he's not, he's got scary good pitch. It's not that it sounded particularly mechanical, but... too perfect?

Personally I was almost doubting that he was really into the music until he did One-On-One, then I decided the previous vibe I was getting was just posturing. He'd said he loved the music before, but I believed it when I watched him do that song. And that's sort of why the show appeals to me; it looks like great musicians enjoying playing. Not just "being pro" but feeling it.

And "for the record" I've liked CeeLo from back in the MoB days, and was happy to see him find success (even if his band wasn't). He's a great talent and a completely unique voice.

I watch a lot of you tube on my wifi blueray when I'm at my family's condo on the beach because we just have basic cable. I've seen a bunch of those clips. They are pretty much all good. Daryl has a really smooth voice. You should hear him sing "Nothing but a Miracle" with Diane Birch. Even though he messes up one of the lyrics, it's like ear candy.

I thought I was the only one that dug Live from Daryl's House.

I am about the furthest thing from a Train fan but the version of "Pappa was a Rolling Stone" they do with Darryl and company is an all time favorite.

I'm a huge Toots fan so I loved that one, but I really think the Cee-Lo episode was the best one yet. The versions of "Crazy" and "I Can't Go For That" are awesome. And that last one really lets you hear the bassist's killer tone.

The TR show was unreal.
Their version of The Want Of A Nail was better than the original (no offense to Bobby Womack of course)
Best version of Papa is the Lee Ritenour version with Melvin Davis on bass

Gotta say. I've seen some great stuff coming out of this show. It's a great premise. Daryl Hall, yes the same from Hall and Oats, is an amazing talent. I never realized it, since I'm not a huge fan of Hall and Oats. Recently he did a recording session with Cee Lo Green and it was amazing. I guess some of the guys from Yonder Mountain String band are currently working with him. So let's post some of your favorites from this show here.

Here's one of my favorites with Cee Lo Green

Ok this one is damn good too.
Time Tough with Toots
Episode 28: Toots and the Maytals :: Live From Daryl's House with Daryl Hall :: Current Episode

I liked the second one.
Cee Lo green though...well-not my cup o' tea.

Old Hall and Oats is almost all great. They did what a lot of bands did in the 80's and 'dumbed-down' their songs - but even at that, those tunes are mostly good too.

The grooves and soul of 70's era H & O is as good as it gets. Smart writing, superior musicianship and amazing vocals - front and back.

Darryl Hall's voice is amazing - always has been and still is.

Whaddya mean by 'dumbed down' their songs? DH grew up listening to Philly Soul and did the studio thing for a minute as well. His own songwriting infused soul with rock. I don't find it dumbed down. Just good songwriting.

I've been a Hall & Oates fan for a while and had really enjoyed their Live In Concert DVD. The band on Live From Daryl's House is just fantastic. Nothing flashy, just deep-rooted heavy musicianship. That show is a great reminder of how wonderful the live music experience can be.

Sorry - bad choice of words - and I take that back.

IMO, songs like "Man Eater", "Private Eyes" - (which I mistakenly thought were representative of their 80's offering) were 'simplified', musically speaking compared to many of their older and (as I now know) contemporary songs.

But now that I look back on their discography and see that there is a HUGE amount of GREAT songs that came from the 80's I see that I misspoke.

Thanks for the correction! Definitely a great band, great song writing, great - and SMART musicians.

Everyone thinks of Ritenour as a lead guitarist, I think he's a master at rhythm guitar, a groove master.

Not bad for a Guitard.

Check out the solo on this one where Bill Champlin scats along with Ritenour's solo at 2:46 (or is it vice a versa?) This is from when Ritenour was a young 25 year old hot shot in the Hollywood studios.

Funny...was never a big Hall & Oates fan, but I've dug "Live From Darryl's House" since it debuted. Kudos for reinventing himself in the digital age.

My personal favorite is his take on "I'll Be Around" (yeah, the old Spinners tune). Think it was on the ep with K.D. Lang as the guest. Worth a listen if you wanna hear some vintage "blue-eyed Philladelphia cream cheese soul"

The guy's still got a helluva voice.
