Looking for a Bass rig

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a bass rig happening pretty soon, the band I am playing in currently is going to be gigging regularly pretty soon and will be recording as well. I'm looking to setup a bass rig that will be suitable for a melodic hardcore type sound, so far i've been thinking about just going from bass to B7k to a DI box to the board live. I don't know too much about live bass setups, i'm pretty much an elec. guitar player playing bass. I would prefer a head/cab combo, i've heard some good things about the orange bass terror, and was thinking of getting it with an Ampeg Portaflex 4x10 800w Bass Cabinet. Should I be using both a head/cab and the B7k ? and what would you recommend for a head/cab ? I'm from Australia, my budget is 1.2k (don't mind saving a little more)

Thanks!

As a rule of thumb you're probably better off with a 4x10 for your genre than most other cab configurations.

That being said it isn't always the case, I recently saw myself switching to a 2x12 set up for my metal band, and I'm quite pleased by my HyDrive 112's. So remember to keep your mind open to different configuration types!

Also, what will you be transporting your rig in? Does weight/size matter to you at all?

What's the used / secondhand market look like in your neck of the woods? "Australia" can mean either the metro Sidney area or Exmouth, WA....two very different markets. As I understand it, stuff is relatively expensive so go used, if possible, and be prepared to make some concessions. You may not end up with the rig of your dreams but you will have a truly giggable set-up and folding money to spare.

Sorry should have added that I'm in Sydney. I won't be able to check out any bass rigs til Saturday, was just wondering what everyone would recommend in terms of a head and cab so I could test those out and see which one I dug, guess ill just try them all haha :D!

Ah okay, so I can go directly from the b7k to the board ?

Yes sir!

eah good luck try some gear out! I do like the portaflex idea but just that amp alone will not give you what you are wanting for a melodic hardcore tone! (im in a melodic/djent band) I totally recommend the darkglass b7k it kills it!! planning on getting one myself (right now I got a hartke bass attack) I would look to hartke or orange!! both are killer!! although the hartke can get more tones the orange just kills it for post hardcore metalcore etc! maybe look into tech21 landmark 300 volumes bass player is using one of those!! and he has it going on in tone! keep lookin and testing tho!

Does anyone know anything about the ampeg SVT-7PRO? It's about $1200 (same price range as a orange bass BT500. I went down to my local store and tried a few amps including a Eden E300, a Bh500 (Tc electronics), rh450, fender rumble 150 and a Hartke 5500 and didn't like any of them. Though I really liked the fender tb-600, though I'm not sure if it will fit the sound I'm going for. There isn't any places aroud me which has the SVT-7pro or bass terror 500. What would you guys recommend between the ampeg orange and fender head? Are there significant differences between them ?

If you want to gig and you're in a loud band you don't want to be going ampless without in-ears. Most engineers won't run a bass signal high through the foldback because they don't own them and cant afford to damage them, so you'll constantly be finding yourself inaudible on stage.

I considered running a Aggie TH pedal and going ampless but didn't because of the volume of the shows I usually play. It's not a good solution for heavy genres.

Where are you at? Who's your main retailer in your area? The true reality is we're not blessed like our US buddies on here. You can't get a stonking rig for $1200AU retail like you can in the states. Buying new I'd look to invest a minimum of $1600 to $2000 if you want to get a rig which will stay with you for a good duration. Investing less will leave you underpowered.

The GK700rbii is a very good amp for what you want to do (I use the 1001) and they can be bought used for a great price. Check Gumtree. You could get your darkglass and run it straight into the Poweramp of the GK for a stupidly good sound. I run amp software into my 1001 and it roars.

Crest, Crown, Peavey, and QSC are great values...even better if you can find them used. Cabs are a bit of a crap-shoot in my book. Some people go ga-ga over the Mesa gear; I don't really see the charm...it's largely subjective. Best thing you can do is test-drive as many as available and find something that sounds good to your ears. You're at somewhat of a disadvantage as the Australian dollar doesn't have the same buying power as it would here in the states.

How come you got set on the b7k? It's a big hunk of $1200 even $AUD.

For DI you really want amp and cab to be hifi accurate so PA doesn't jump too many EQ hoops reproducing it similarly to how you hear it. If your search finds you a regular bass cab you're better off to mic it.

These holy grail rig searches by noobie bass players often end in them getting some brand new combo with limited output because they are shopping with Mommy. You're not that guy are you?

To be fair, while I agree about the darkglass being a big chunk of the investment, they're the must-have dirt box for any heavy-genre rig. They're pretty much unparalleled at what they do and I will be getting one next time I'm about to get back out on the road. I would focus on getting a gig rig FIRST and then worry about the dirt box.

There are only 3 amps lines on the Australian retail market now that I as a metal bassist would touch, those being the TH500 from Aguilar, the Gallien Krueger 700/1000rb and the Ampeg PF800 (the 800 only). This is based solely on how much db volume and headroom I know I'll need and all of these come in over $1000 without even considering a cab setup (which would not encompass anything less than a 410 or 412). All of those amps will get you close to that front-end saturated tone without needing the B7k as standard.

The 2nd hand market holds many more price appropriate options but many of those the OP has already said he doesn't really care for...

Nah I'm not that guy, mommy will probably kick my ass. my farts are louder than a combo :(
