Looking for THAT tone - ampeg 8x10

:) SVT 4Pro
RMS Power Output: 300-Watts x 2/900 (mono-bridged @ 8 Ohms)
RMS Power Output: 490-Watts x 2/1200 (mono-bridged @ 4 Ohms)
RMS Power Output (2 Ohms): 600-Watts x 2
Preamp: Tubes (3 x 12AX7)
Power Amp: Solid State
Tone Controls: 3-Band
Mid Tone Control: 5-Position
Graphic EQ: Yes, 9-Band
Ultra Low/High Boosts: Yes
Balanced Line Out: Yes x 2 Pre/Post with Level
Effects Loop: Yes x 2
Preamp Out/Power Amp In: Yes x 2
Dimensions (W x H x D inches): 19 x 5.6 x 15.5
Weight: 39.5 Pounds

I found one of these online used. Will this push the svt 8x10's?

Also, it says the pre amp is tube, but the power amp is solid state. Does that really matter for tone, or are the 3 tubes really what's pushing this thing?

Gracias

It will push the 810.

But no, that really matters. A lot. The 3 tubes aren't doing much of anything except producing a slightly different tone than a solid state preamp. They definitely do not push anything. Any amp will a solid state power amp is going to be very different than a tube amp. Less (apparent) power, and if you clip it it will sound nasty, yucky, bad.

If you like the sound of it that's fine, but it's NOT a true SVT.

It will push two of them like crazy. If the tone is similar to the SVT-III PRO, you will dig it. Search around here for info on them though... Seems like they have a bit of trouble with overheating or something.

i would forget about that amp. if you want an SVT's sound, just get a real one. i guarantee that you won't be disappointed. with your budget, you can easily find a good running vintage SVT for around $1500. ......or a nearly new VR for less (around $1200)

You know, a GK head through an Ampeg cab has been the staple for many pro (like Flea) and non-pro bassists for decades. I used a GK 400RB through an Ampeg 4x10 for awhile myself, and it was pretty dang nice. Since you are not necessarily wanting the "SVT" sound, you may not necessarily need an SVT.

If I were you, I'd go straight to a GK 800RB and Boss EQ & chorus pedals. That would be a great start for the Justin Chancellor sound.

Add something like the VT or a Big Muff for the Timmy Commerford sound...

ect..
