Looking to buy a shortscale

You can't go wrong with a Fender Mustang PJ with flats.

The Mustang JMJ is a great bass. The color is super cool and the relicing is tasteful. The sound is big and powerful, but the neck profile is thicker than the Mustang PJ if that matters to you.

I had a Lakland HB30 and loved it so much I decided to commission something even better. This is a custom Kinal bass that I’m picking up in two days. I had special wooden knobs made by David King that are not shown in this pic...they will be put on when I pick it up.

If you’re on a budget I’d recommend the Lakland HB30, the Supro, a Serek, or waiting for the new Nordstrand Acinonyx.

When going short-scale there seems to a more choices in Hollow/Semi-Hollow models than with long-scales. If you want to try something besides a solid body you have many options with short-scales.

Gretsch Junior Jet is an excellent choice. Inexpensive, well made and sounds great.

I'll second the Serek recommendation-I ordered a Midwestern 2 with his B90 pickup and couldn't be more pleased. I asked for it to be as light as he could make it, and it came in at 7 pounds. It sounds great live and in studio.

Depending on your budget I would highly recommend the Gretsch Thunder Jet. I recently got one and it is cool x1000. I have TI Jazz Flats on mine but it sounds great with rounds as well. Street price is pushing $2000, but there are a few online for $1700 at the moment and I found mine for considerably less than that.

More Gretsch love! I recently tried one at the local GC, & I play every time I go in there now. Perfect mesh of old-school & clarity...if that makes sense. They come in a variety of flavors, too.

If I could have 10 Precisions and a half a dozen short scales, they would be: JMJ Mustang (Own one), Reverend Dub King, Epiphone Allen Woody, Hofner, Etc.

So many good choices!

The JMJ mustang is just great. An amazing neck. Great hardware. No tweaks needed. Pricey but worth it.

I have been through many many shortscales. I have owned most of them over the years. Started with a Hagstrom in the 60's. The BEST value by FAR is the Fender Squier Jaguar Short Scale P/J for $199 or less. This is an amazing instrument - sounds great and plays so well with the thin, narrow neck. I use our BL's all the time and plan to steal it from him.

Mu current favorite is the newish Fender Mustang P/J. Narrow J neck, P and J for extra growl, really nice fit and finish and the best part - it uses standard short scale strings, instead of the hard-to-find Medium scale strings of the other Mustangs (that also have fat necks). Mine wears T.I. Jazz Flats and sounds wonderful - nearly identical to my MIA P Bass. Adorama has them on sale from time to time at a bargain price.

The Supro looks good but expensive. The Hofners are nice, but sound like a Hofner always, and the ultra-narrow string spacing takes some getting used to.The Allen Woody Rumblekat is another good choice as is the Gretsch Junior Jet with the single pickup. I am mentioning only those of reasonable costs, since you didn't give a budget. If price is no object, the Birdsongs are the way to go.

For best performance with the B-15 I think that the single pickup or P/J models will be the best, with their stronger upper bass and less ultra-lows.
