I don't know what all of this "can't use a single 4x10 with loud bands" nonsense is all about, my DB750/GS410 setup is stupid loud and sits in the mix like a sledgehammer...the only time I can even use a second 4x10 is on big theater or festival gigs, otherwise I'm just eating everything else onstage...
I just picked up a GS210 for that exact reason, to have something in between the 4x10 and 8x10 setup for bigger club gigs, and now if I want totally ridiculous UBER BASS I can even run a massive 10x10 setup

So yes, in my opinion, if your notes are losing all of their girth at higher volumes, definitely look into swapping out either the amp or the cab instead of just adding more of the same cabinets that aren't giving you the sound you're looking for
