I've got a RW P and I must admit that the burn is very cheesy. I have a '63 P and there are no ciggie burns on the headstock at all. Fortunately I bought the RW for its sound and feel so it's no real biggie.

Here are the rules again, folks.
Since artificially aging an instrument (i.e. relicing) is, at least visually, no different than artificially coloring an instrument (i.e. painting) any posts or threads insulting such procedures are hereby banned under the "no insulting ugly instruments" rule that has been the long-standing policy here at talkbass. You're welcome to give your own personal reasons why you don't like the look of worn instruments, however they ended up in that condition, but slagging the instruments or the players who play them is going to jeopardize your posting abilities here.

Make a note of this. If you don't approve of someone else's finish choice, keep it to yourself, or if you absolutely -must- vent your opinion, tell them privately.

No one has to "earn" the finish they want on their bass, plain and simple.

Honestly. There have been enough threads and certainly enough posts about why people don't like RWs. Another one about a specific reason that you don't like them...not a whole lot of point.

its just a common pointless thread, is it not ok for guys to discuss things ovr and over which basicly leads nowhere.. We do it everyday, this thread doesn't harm anybody it was just started as a discussion peice. I knew I was gonna get the whiners with their "ugh, sigh, this thread is so pointless, ugh I can't believe your whining about that, ugh why couldn't you just start a thread that makes sense, like if thinner strings are whimpier." yea cause that makes sense. I'm not offending you, and the space I may be wasting on the forum, well I'm a supporting member so I might as well get something out of itj, the avatar sure ain't with it.

All kidding Aside, guys it's not the end of the world don't get offended by a thread that is out of the norm.

I'm guessing you're a young guy. Back before it was illegal to smoke in bars, you would keep your cigarette tucked into the E string and smoke it between songs. As it got shorter, it would burn the headstock. With a roadworn instrument, it's pretty expected. If you look at most of the guitars and basses that the fake ones are emulating, they will have cigarette burns.

they still smoke in the bars I play in kills me because I quit smoking about 8 years ago after 14 years and the smoke makes me nauseous now. I have to admit my old 6 string roadstar II had cig burns on it though LOL.

Very easy fix if you don't like the burn sand it off.....If you want a burn put a smoke on it,,,,,If the one on it looks fake put a real cig on it and make it real.......

The Fender has the Point made. Eric Clapton's guitar a burn headstock. An idea in mind. So strange. They burn the all of them. Really, Who does that?

If smoking while playing is "so strange" to you, I'd have to assume you are VERY young, and never been in a bar with a band playing. If that's the case, fair enough, but this is a VERY common occurance on a bass that's been "worked".

I absolutely agree that it's common on older guitars and basses. That doesn't mean it is desirable. I always found it to be an unnecessary and thoughtless thing to do to an instrument. I sure wouldn't buy one that had it done on purpose. Those who want to are welcome to - it's their money.

I've always found the whole relic-ing idea very odd. All of my basses are new and shiny looking. I gig them hard but clean them regularly & make sure I look after them.

Would you pay 40 percent more for a new car that had dents and scrapes down the side when it came out of the dealership? Thought not.

They must of smoked allot of non-filtered lucky's, Camels. Pall Malls etc in those days. I used to stick my cig in my headstock in my old guitar slingin days years ago and never had one burn out that low. Look at the pick above, you would have to leave it in there for a long time to hit the headstock and most would snuf out when it hits the butt.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off so negative. This topic's just been beaten over the head a thousand times, and it's gotten really old. Being a fan of relics, I personally just want everyone to play what they like and not worry so much about the stuff they don't.

I tried the roadworns and i thought they were ok not much better for the price than the 50's classic i owned then for the price. I got a kick out of the shop i was in (Fender dealer) who dropped the prices on the first shipment when they sat in the store. he said "no one wants to pay that much for a beat up looking bass so we dropped the price to almost our cost I dont dig the relicing its like the opposite of a facelift on an old women.

I am surprised by your evaluation of the Road Worn P-bass. I have played several of them and A/B'd them with 50's classics and my own '71 P-bass. I have got to tell you that there was not a single one that did not impress me.

The sad story about "no one wants to pay that much..." just reaffirms my assertion that people are listening to these with their eyes. Fender has hit a home run with this instrument, IMHO. They are miles better than the H-1, IME, and the 50's classic--as nice as they are--can't touch them for tone and feel. All IMHO, but I gotta say I have played a lot of them, and will some day own a RW P and a RW Jazz. They both make me think of CS relics.

I sure did, not only the Lucky's, Camel, and Pall Malls, but also Chesterfields and Players Navy Cut. I was bad to my lungs, but seem to have survived so far...
