Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Yea that's exactly what I had going on. I called Don and he sent me out a bundle of 1 and 1/4" standoffs to replace the 1" standoffs, and no more grill thwack.

Don told me his newer compact 15/6 cabs recess the front face a bit more to avoid this issue.

Yea, it really only takes around 1/4 to 1/8th of an inch :)

For like 99% of the drivers on the market, room for 10mm of excursion is plenty I guess ;)

Give it a year and I'll have a 15/6/1 and a poweramp setup :D Then I plan on not having to deal with gear again, since my GB 3.0 combo could handle smaller gigs. I'm already getting kinda sick of hauling two 40lb 1x12 cabs, mostly due to my huge set of stairs....

So if I got this [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
and a 15/6/1
that could handle some pretty huge gigs yeah??

Need some money man

The 15/6/1 + power amp will do approximately what an Ampeg sealed 8x10 or an Ampeg 6x10HLF will do in terms of peak SPL. Definitely louder than any mass market 2x12 or pair of 1x12s driven to excursion.

Mine weighs around 48lbs. :)

Judging from reports this cab is very close to what I'm looking for, but I'm concerned by Chef's reports of how ill-suited to DB it is.

I'm wondering if the cab that Ryan Mohr had built--3015 in a smaller enclosure--would be more appropriate for DB. Like Ryan, I don't really need anything over 4K, and small size/light weight is very desirable to me (two hip replacements).

This little cab would still have some serious bottom, right? Roughly how many -db at 40hz would you guess?

If you don't need a horn, you'd likely be ok with either.
If you do need a horn, a different incarnation of a 15/6 isn't going to be an improvement, IMO.
I don't care for a cab without a horn for db-I feel you just don't get finger/string noise and "air," without one.
Additionally, I didn't care for the 18Sound mid driver with DB.

I do have an LDS 2x8+5 that I like well enough for DB, but my fave is the LDS 2x8+horn.

Thanks for the reply Chef. I'm more concerned by your earlier comments regarding low-end feedback and honky midrange. Do you think the smaller enclosure and lack of mid-driver might chill those things out?

Also, just for reference, which DB players' tones do you admire/emulate?

No, I don'!. That would just be darker, IMO.
I like Ray Brown, Christian McBride, the cat that plays with Little Willies...lotsa folks out there to admire.

IME, 115, especially the 3015LF, as the lone driver for DB is a horrid idea. Nuttin but mud there. Even the regular 3015, for me, sucked for DB in the Mesa Diesel/TL606-ish cabs. Blech. Didn't sound natural, at all.

Your sonic goals may be much different than mine though...

Perhaps the 12/6/horn might work. Smaller box, not so heavy of a low ende driver, different mid driver, horn for strings and air...I'd like to try that sometime.

OK then, we're totally on the same page tone-wise. I thought maybe you were going to say more of a Buster Williams/Eddie Gomez/Gary Peacock type tone...

Can't be pure mud...it's pretty flat out to 2khz...

What kind of pickup do you use btw?

The 12/6/(horn) idea is cool too...that could be light and small...

Thanks again.

Swerve for Kitty:

I'm using a bassmax pickup, and K&K two band pre.
It's something like "ok to pretty decent."
I've tried others, they're all compromises. This one seems to be the best compromise, for me. Nice low end; decent mids and air...and that piezo top end that's always kind of a wrestling match to make sound right.
After much experimentation, I mostly use either a mesa walkabout or MBF1; and the aforementioned LDS 2x8's.
My bass is a 1961 King with a carved top, my strings are Thomastic Dominants.

Have you considered a 3012LF with a Faital W6N8-120?
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
The efficiency match is very good and the Faital looks like it's good to 8KHz. Not so forward between 2-3KHz where hearing is most sensitive but has a nice rise above 5KHz. Don built one of these and KJung did a short review; had a nice airy treble. The voicing sounded interesting and even though I play cabs with horns I wonder whether you'd miss one with a 2-way that went up to 8KHz.

We did some test with the Faital and while it did sound very good with the 3012LF, that "nice airy treble" is really directional. As long as you are directly in front of the cab, you will get it. Step off the the side a bit and it's gone. Still, I was impressed by the sound, considering I had no previous experience with any of their drivers and they seem very well made.

Update regarding the buzz in my cab. I determined it wasn't the head. Next, I removed the grill to see if I could pinpoint the problem. BTW, inserting toothpicks into the screw holes worked like a charm. Anyway, the issue was the grill itself. I did tighten all the screws on the speakers. Honestly, that seemed to take care of it. The only rattling/buzzing I was hearing after that was other stuff in the room. I guess I'm good to go for now... :bassist:

I'm not quite understanding this. Why would you want upper treble sizzle and click when you are playing DB? Usually fingernoise is a negative, and when I think DB I think a woody, blooming tone.

Doesn't just have to be click or finger noise, depending on EQ. Many of us need some high harmonic content for pitch definition. Distortion high up often really kills woodiness and the beauty of the tone too, IME.
