Low Down Sound Club: V2

Just got back from playing a large car show using my LDS 15/6 driven with a 1000w. The tone was amazing but even at that volume level ( I had it close to cranked ) it doesnt take long before the sound dies out in front of the stage. I had a 20ft cord and the volume level was immensely different out front vs being on the stage. Kinda makes me miss my old Schroeder 1212r which cut thru so well, but didnt sound ANYWHERE as nice.

Granted this is probably the loudest we've ever played without PA support.

Foz, your cab would make a scarry pa speaker! I have two LDS 3-way tops for pa and a pair of 1x15 subs should be here this week. And then two more later. Im going to take a picture when I finally get all the pieces.

Hey kringle,

Among other changes, the crossover to waveguide would need to be in the 2.5K to 3K Hz region to be decent for PA, using a fixed L-pad. Directivity/pattern optimization really makes a difference. A lot of cheap and poorly designed SR enclosures are sold that ignore the principle. But the good stuff doesn't, and that's a priority that real pro SR guys will be looking at when assembling a system small or large, cheap or expensive.

I had a similar impression until I listened to recordings in a band/gig contexts. The bass via both 15/6 and 12/6 cabs was WAY louder than I thought while playing. There's a big difference between a "cutting" bass sound and one that's actually infused wtih the music. In my experience, these cabs w/mid drivers are not in the "cutting" family. But they do a much better job integrating with the song. All depends on what you're after.

Hey Ukiah Bass,

The 6ND410 mid driver section if not padded back excessively can cut with the best of them. But as you have noticed the concept of the design is predicated on supportive mix-slotting even when good PA support is not used.

I'll know more in a couple of hours when I'll playing my new cab at an outdoor gig with no PA support, but it seems to me that if you take control of the cab's capabilities by having a horn attenuator on board and you are bi-amping through a variable crossover - you can make your rig snuggle down into the pocket like a teddy bear or cut like a hammer as you please.

Two 2x8's; one with horn, one with mid driver:

Hey Chef,
I've been thinking about s 2x8 stack. How big are your 2x8's? Do you know how much power they can take? Are they both 8 ohms or 4 ohms?

Have you seen the 286 Don built for me last December? 4Ω, 600 watts rms handling, 27"h x 14"w x 15 3/4"d, 50 lbs. with two very heavy duty Neo Ciare 8" drivers and the usual 18 Sound 6 1/2" mid/high driver. I have not gigged with it yet, just some loud rehearsals and this thing kills! Check out the pics earlier in the thread.

Ya, I thought it was pretty cool when I saw it. I was thinking about something similar with the mid driver mounted beside the top 8" (not on top of), so that you could stack another cab on top that had a mid next to the bottom 8" and a tweeter up top. Those 8's that you used are pretty pricey though. I don't think I could swing for 4 of them.

well i finally gigged with my new "short stack", a pair of LDS single 15" cabs, and all i can say is "wow!"

they're as small as he makes them, 18" high with no horn and two front ports, loaded with emi kappa 15a speakers. the pair stacked with my crest power amp on top is just a little over a yard high.

this thing fills an average bar/club room like a blob-monster in a steve mcqueen movie!

with my p-bass driving a sansamp into one side of a crest 750w/side power amp, it was smooth, thick and even, all the way down to C# (we tune 1/2 step down, and then occasionally dropping the low E to D).

i got to go out front and listen while a couple guest players sat in, and it was perfect for my style (p-bass, pick, modern rock). there was plenty of percussive attack, and a big, warm, clear sound, just from onstage (it wasn't in the PA at all).

a total SVT-killer, and easy to move around.

Practiced for the first time with my 15/6. This is with a 3-piece rock band in cramped quarters. Having the 6 for the mids made all the difference. Didn't have to put the cab up on a chair like the 212 DRBass it replaces. And even at 8ohms, it's as loud or louder than the 4ohm 212. This is good since I'm driving it with a Tfunk 420. Very pleased with it.

Beyond 20' the low end is going to start dropping off with any cab. Thats why bass players should really embrace the pa system. You can get by fine without it but, you have to turn up loud enough to destroy the mix. I find the best way to get by without a pa is to use a high pass filter to get rid of the very deepest lows that just rumble around the room and boost some low mids, 80hz to 160hz. Thats with an actual bass rig. Through the pa I still high pass around 70hz and boost 350hz, something that I would have never done before going totally direct. Good luck.

Hadn't talked to Don in a while as he's really working to get everyone's cabs out and catch up. I just talked with him and he's getting caught up!

Good news, bad news....

My big idea for that Beyma coax 15 cab is shot to heck. Don said the box would be quite large to make that driver worth paying for. That's the bad news. The good news is, that has finally pushed me to have a small 3015 cab like Ryan's built. I just LOVE the 'old school with grind' tone of his cab (I have the two way with tweeter thing well covered already). I will have it tuned just a touch higher than Ryan did, per an earlier discussion.

And... at the moment... vintage hardware, surf green tolex and a black grill cloth to match up with my A-C Nitro surf green LG 60's style J Bass:eek::D
