Generally speaking I believe Don will let you cancel your order if need be but honestly I believe his work to be worth the wait - it's not vaporware :) You see someone getting a cabinet almost every week.

I'm sure it will be worth the wait - heck, I'd wait twice as long based on the price/quality. I'd just like to know how long I was gonna wait... makes dealing with the anticipation easier :D

I guess I've become numb :smug: When I order anything custom I no longer ask the time frame, and if I'm given an estimate I expect it will be at least 50% more. Doesn't mean I still wouldn't like to have it sooner but I'm a lot less stressed about it.

That's a good attitude to take. If it's worth buying custom, and the builder is really good, it's worth a reasonable amount of extra time.

For all the neurotic fussbudgets that custom builders routinely have to deal with, a cool customer with a trusting, laid-back attitude earns major karma bucks in the cosmic bank... :cool:

It might have started when we moved to an island four years ago. The mantra out here is that everything takes twice as long and costs 50% more than expected. At least my custom music equipment comes at the original price :)

Got my Tecamp Puma1000 today to use with my LDS 15//6/1. So far I've updated everyone on how it performed with a Carvin DCM2000L being driven by a Tech21 VT Bass (not great), a Markbass LMTube (good, not great tone, but insufficient power to get to full excursion), and a Carvin B2000 (great tone after extensive EQ'ing, plenty of power, but problematic high end and other features). The latest candidate is the might Tecamp Puma1000. This amp was basically designed to either drive one large 8 ohm cabinet or two small 4 ohm cabinets. One large 8 ohm cabinet you say? Doesn't that just SCREAM 15/6/1? I thought so too :p

Absolutely incredible tone. The best combination of amp and cab I've ever owned. Set all the knobs to noon, adjust the input gain and the combination sounds AMAZING. Plenty of low end that's still tight, a polite but present midrange from low to high and a very sparkly Marcus type high end. Not a vintage sounding combination at all, but if you're looking for a modern-pop type of tone I don't think you could do any better. This is all based on living room testing. I have two rehearsals this week and a show this weekend, so I'll know more and will give a more comprehensive update on the pairing after they're finished.

Cool! It really is an amazing match-up for those cabs IMO and IME. As you say, pure and studio monitor clean, but still nice and warm with lots of character. I know how great my Puma500 sounds with the 15/6's and 12/6's. I can't quite imagine what it would be like to take that tone from 280 watts (which is the Puma500 output at 8ohms) to 1000 watts:eek: That must be something!

Clean punchy bass tones?

I'd like to try one of dem Pumas but I be surprised if I liked it better than what I'm getting out of my new [used] Agggy DB680 into a 1515/66+1. You dial up a bit of low mid around 200-300 and WOW the ridges on your round wounds will leap snarling out of the cab.

I bet that sounds amazing also, although now you are into a 4 rack space rig. I remember that pre being VERY present in the mids. The Puma is more about deep lows and super hi fi (but still musical) highs, and is more 'creamy' in the mids versus growly or grindy. Very different vibe than the DB680... both great in their own way of course.

The cool thing about the Puma is you have that deep low end that really takes advantage of that big xmax of the 3015LF, and also BIG power (1000 watts at 8ohms) in a hardcover novel sized unit:bassist:

You can get [or not get] any that with a DB680... 3 bass boost switch settings [off,+ and ++], bright switch, bass and treble knobs that work just like you'd think they might, fx blend knob, 2 parametric eq's, plus fully adjustable bi-amping. Getting old school fat, or scooped, or thick & creamy, or growly or bright and shiny... no problem, dials up fast and intuitively and it is brainless to add a little or a lot of what you want. The ONLY thing it doesn't do is dirty but I got a rack mount modded VT for that [and the blend fx knob makes this much more useful for me than running the thing straight wired]. Love this preamp - could not care less about the size because it doesn't weigh much.

But I do need to get a higher powered lightweight amp. I can run the caps flat on my xti2000 at stupid loud on the 1515/66+1 fEarful [might just be the mileage on this amp YMMV] and hauling around a 60 lbs. big iron 2,500 watt power amp is getting old. Thinking about a Peavey IPR in the 3k watt range when they start shipping [anybody know when that will happen?]

All that said - I would like to try one of dem Pumas... it sounds nice.

After extensive reading of threads about this custom cab builder and the other (of who's name we do not speak) there is a clear and distint Diachotomy. There seems a true and honest desire to make truly custom customers happy over here.
I've never dealt with LDS, but it sounds like he would make a moratorium on new orders before he had wait times in the years.
I also agree with Ken that a "helper" or some outsourcing on some "standard" cabs could help decrease waiting times, if that is not Don's vision for LDS he should not go that way. He puts his name behind every custom, personally biilt cabinets. It's nto his fault his demand is rising... Maybe that will create an opportunity for soemone else.

Personally, this is one of my favorite threads on all of talkbass... I love to see what he comes out with next...

Anyone know more about his "long-throw" 10" woofers?

I've e-mailed him and he sugggested calling instead but I've had a difficult time reaching him on the phone (just bad timing on my part most likely).

That was my point. It is currently a manageable coupel of months, typically a month beyond origiinal estimate. That is a far vry from OTHER OPERATIONS.
The wait time beofre, was less, but his demand increased significantly. As has been mentioned, he is burning the midnight oil to try and keep up, but still falling a "bit short" although reasonable.
If his demand were to increase again, he would have to make some descisions. He could artificially limit demand, by cutting off orders, he could estimate significantly longer times, which may also reduce demand some, or he could do something else I won't mention... something none of us want.
My presumption, was that he would make that decision in a manner that customers would feel was fair and honsest, as that is the impression those in the know have given.

Are you coming to the Seattle GTG this Sunday? I have a few different preamps I can bring along that work pretty well for me with my DIY 15/6/1. I could bring a power amp too if needed, but I'm hoping to travel light this time. PM me or post in the GTG thread for specifics if you like.
