Looks good. I like the idea of the extra porting, although I suppose it only comes into play when you're putting the big juice the cab. But, it's always nice to have the option.

Porting just allows you to tune the low end response of the cab. There is no 'extra', etc., nor does volume or wattage come into play. It just depends on the driver, the size of the box, and the nature of the low end you prefer. You can get to the same place with front or rear tube ports or bottom slot ports.
 
If I'm not mistaken, more port area allows for higher wattage without the risk of port noise or chuffing. The same tuning for that box could have been achieved with one port instead of three.

Has nothing to do with wattage as far as I know (I'm strictly an 'interested layman' on these issues), but you are correct... a poorly designed (i.e., too small) port will chuff if you dial up a lot of low end. A very large single port versus a few smaller ports (resulting in the same port area) that give you the same tuning shouldn't matter much.... front, rear, tube, slot.... Don mostly makes those decisions primarily due to customer size of box requirements.... i.e., you can make the cab a bit smaller with front tube ports than a shelf along the bottom, and in some cases (like with a single 12 cab), you can make the cab even smaller by using rear tube porting.
 
Just being close to walls at all can be a problem with any cab, though perhaps rear ports exacerbate this.

I think it was Bill Fitzmaurice who told me "your cab should be 4 feet from any wall" at one point. I'm not sure that *ever* happens for me and the stages I work on where in many cases the backline is shoved as tight to the back wall of the stage as it can get:(

I have had drummers comment on liking the rear ports because it throws a little more of the sound their way, when usually they're in line with the cab at best, or behind the cab at worst.

Correct. The air velocity in the port is directly related to power input and a bigger port area allows more power input without distortion. That only matters if the driver and the rest of the cab design is up to the task, of course.

Using different port configurations or multiple ports also create their own unique set of secondary resonances in the ports themselves. But the ramifications of that are pretty far out there in Spock territory, even for me. :cool:
 
@ KJung: Yes, it certainly is. I am thoroughly impressed by this cabinet.

@BassGreaser: It's the 15/6.5. No joke, my bag with my textbooks and computer is more difficult to carry than this cabinet. Super, super light, I can hold it in one hand and my bass in the other.

Interesting. My only chuffing issues came from dialing up the bass too much on a cab with poorly designed small ports. I always thought the air velocity was due to low end, not absolute volume and power at all frequencies. All I know is, when you crank 30 hz into a cab, even at low wattage/volume, that is a pretty good 'chuffing' test:p

It is due to low end Ken -- but Are We Not Bassists?

Anyhow, I rarely had chuffing issues either before the current generation of bass drivers like the 3015LF became available. ;)
