I share your curiosity on pickups... The first LEJ I had was the LEJ6 Cocobolo with a Bartolini preamp. Personally, I prefer the LE pre, but miss the midrange control at 500/800 Hz....

HOWEVER!!! I used my LEJ 5/21 today in the passive mode on just the neck pickup and plucking about half way between the heal of the neck and the pickup... I found about as close to a P sound that I've ever had. I may be losing my P jones over this!!!

While the neck was being replaced in the fall, I picked up a LAKLAND Skyline BG P with flats on it and fell in love... I've been wanting that P sound, and love playing my LEJ... I was really pleased when Brian told me he was building an LEP for NAMM... In the same conversation, he stated that the neck pickup alone will get the sound... Today... I found it!!! :cool:

Hey LowB,

I still consider myself to be a Pbass player - even though I am a total convert to LEJ basses. I have had other bassist friends laughing that every bass I pick up, I automatically adjust to find a Pbass sweet spot :)

My standard tone for the LEJs is in active mode, about 90% volume on the neck pickup, about 20% on the bridge pickup and I pluck over the neck pickup position. I run my tone knob at aout 80% and my LEJs growl and thump as well as any P. They also have the added benefit of an awesomely playable neck profile and some active EQ to bump in a bit of bottom end. In many ways, my LEJ sounds like a super Pbass at times :D I'm particularly happy with my Hollowbody LEJ, which sounds like a fat Pbass thumping through any mix.

So I'm still tempted by the LEPs (of course) but I'm pretty sure the Js do an awesome P tone already. And thats all down to the pre and pickup versatility in my opinion. I have had basses with traditional P pickups and other brand preamps that still couldn't get a single decent P bass sound.

I love the versatility of the LEJ and couldn't agree with you more! I've recently had Brian switch the pickups to single coil and really don't miss the the double stack, with exception that the doubles are quieter... Though the single coil does give me more variety in the passive mode. In the active mode, it sounds fatter like the double stacks. I run the bass knob flat/center and the treble about 50% cut from center.

I love the neck!!! Try playing in the passive mode, plucking as you described, with tone around 50-60%, volume about 90% and open up the amp a little more.... Classic vintage sound!!! :cool:
