Low or High Pass Filter with bass overdrive/distortion?

Hey guys,

I'm still trying to work out a way to get rid of some "buzziness" when using drives and distortions direct (or to the amp for that matter). I have read somewhere around here that some users, @JimmyM , for example, use filters on their tone. I've been trying to read up online about which I would use. A low or high pass to cut the buzzy highs, but my brain no worky so well. I has the dumbs. I just don't get it. Some low pass filter pedals that I've seen are more like resonant auto-wah pedals or envelope filters. That's not what I'm looking for.

Can anyone guide me towards which type of filter I'd want, and maybe even suggest where I might find such a thing? The high pass filters on ebay look nothing like a pedal or anything that I could use. I just don't know what I'm looking for.

If you get a chance. Try your dirt pedal in a parallel effects loop with a graphic EQ. Try the EQ in pre and post effect placement and note how it functions. Post effect EQ allows you to tailor the overall sound but does not allow you to influence which frequencies become saturated. The cool thing with using pre effect EQ is you have a lot of control over which frequencies are most saturated. Boost the frequencies you want to distort and cut the rest. With a parallel loop you blend the equalized dirty signal back with the clean flat signal.

Or you could split your effects into two channels and use light dirt on one side and heavy dirt with EQ on the other.
For example, you could split your signal with a KFK EQ or a JHS splitter and then combine your post effect signals back into one channel with an Xotic X-Blender.

Before investing in splitters, blenders, or parallel loops, I suggest experimenting with graphic EQ before your dirt pedals to see if this technique has potential to meet your needs. Borrow an EQ if necessary or audition a few pedals at a music store.

I had @Azure Skies custom build this for me to potentially be used at the end of my chain — the XLR out has added gain to send to the FOH, the 1/4” out is NOT affected by the LPF or gain (only HPF). Called it “the dirt slayer” for obvious reasons ;)
