I'm wondering if anyone knows of some cabs that'll 35 or 38, whatever the word is after that. :) I don't think it's SPL, but it could be. Just looking for something lower than 40 or 42, which is what most cabs are. I'm looking for getting more of a "dub" sound on some tunes, and on my Mesa into the Schro cab, and I've got the parametric EQ on, and boost anything below 40, it really cuts out.
Not a huge deal, but if it were feasible, I'd like to go lower!! :hyper:
Might getting a sub or two be in mind? I know Eric from Sublime/LBDAS uses a 2x18 cab on stage along with his 8x10... ;)

If you really wanna ensure getn down that low - a homemade cab might be the way to go - that way once a suitable driver is chosen - you could just mod the port to suit.
I doubt the cab may be very good for any other freq's tho....

When i made my cabs - i tuned them to 40Hz.
It's was possible to go a fair bit lower, but it meant sacrificing anything above about 2000Hz, so I thought a nice rounded 40 was the way to go.
Hope it helps,
smo

herz is what you are thinking about and the 18s do go a little lower but the main thing about 18s is they can hold the ground at that low and still sound huge whereas a 10 could possibly do that low but the speakers start giving out perse and they dont sound the note as well as the 18 but if your playing faster the 18 will not move as fast as the 10

my new El Whappo does 29Hz @ -6dB with the new neo drivers and lighter weight plywood it's amazing @ 77lbs! (real world weight, not website weight)

it's the deepest, clearest, most authoritive cab I've EVER heard / used... and I use to biamp with a 1x18 Yamaha PA sub for lows.

fyi: it's a 15" + 12" + 6" + 2x soft dome tweeter in one cab with individual chambers and porting from each and a 4-way x-over

Back in the day of early dub did they really have cabs that went that low? I always wondered this.

I bet a nice 2x15 would give you the sound you want even if it doesn't go below 30hz

Not really sure, but I know they do now, so it's ok! ;)

Yeah i'm really considering a 2x 115 setup for portability, or a 112+115 setup. I used to have a Mesa Diesel 2x15, and that was the ultimate cab. Ever. Nothing has ever come close, but at 130lbs, it's tough to hulk up a flight of stairs or two... ;)

I always assumed that the dub thing came from separate subwoofers.

It's added complexity, but might be worth it if you do music that doesn't sound like dub, too. You could have some kind of crossover and a separate power amp and subs for the times you need to rattle the roof.

but it's hard to design a speaker that's truly full range (flatish down to 30hz) loud, efficient, and smaller than a truck. It's also hard to come close to this without ending up with a muddy midrange.

These are just very general observations ... I've never put together a rig for dub or other bowel-shaking bass, so someone else might know something more practical.

If the cab tuning is the same as it was pre-Neo 15" (for which the same specs were quoted) then it can't be -6dB @ 29Hz because that's about a fifth below the 40Hz tuning frequency below which the response drops at 24dB/octave.

No 4-way crossover either. Single order high-pass filters on the 6" and the tweeters, and the 12" and 15" are run full-range.

I once used a powered subwoofer made by Yorkville Sound. It was a 2X10 bandpass cabinet with a built in 700 watt amp. It really could pump out the lows. Totally useless of course for anything else but it used to get the Reggae guys excited.

whatever, this cab is WAY deeper than anything else I've used in the past 25+ years

That may be part of why I'd digging it then... I've aways liked the top end out of a 12 or 15 driver. I may have assumed 4-way cab = 4 way x-over.

jokerjkny: :smug: I just had some work done on the fretted 5 and picked it up this morning.... How's it sound from here? :smug:

SWR Henry 8x8: -6dB @ 35Hz and 18KHz

thanks for the inputs. i wouldn't need this kind of sound ALL the time or for EVERY song, but i'd say about 45-50% though.
so, i figured it'd be worth it to check out some stuff and see what's up.

i check out a henry at a GC one time and was totally blown away. and that was with some crappy ampeg on top of it!!
sounded nice.

i'm probably going for the Tri112x2, Tri115x2 or Tri112+115 route, I think. they seem to be able to do both of what i want AND be portable as hell. but, hey, i just may go pick up one of those Meyer Sound 2x18 powered subs... just in case i might need it. ;)

I can highly recommend the Henry as a great do it all cab: it doesn't have to sound "dubb-y," but it sure can. It is a little on the large side though, but the tilt back wheels help that a lot.

The current catalog page on their website claims response to 35Hz with 102dB sensitivity, which no driver made is capable of, and -6dB at 29 Hz, which no driver is capable of either. It doesn't mention neo magnets on the woofers, so perhaps there is a non-catalog version available, but those performance specs are still impossible to acheive.
