Mad Professor Bass OD???

Exactly how I feel now that I have a DD

I'll probably still get the MP version when/if it ever is released if they keep it under $200, but any thoughts of shelling out the big $ for a BJFE version have been obliterated from my mind by the excellence of the DD

Yeah it's hard to say. But I don't think there was ever many Blueberrys out there for people to stop in a shop and try. There are alot of bassplayers who don't come to this site. Those players buy whatever guitar center carries - if they are lucky maybe they have a cool neighborhood shop with some uncommon used effects.

If mad professor (and maybe they have) hooked up with a few distributors to schlep the brand into the wider market then I'm thinking they could easily sell at least a few hundred a year?

Think about the Zvex Woolly Mammoth. Arguably a much more "specialist" pedal than the Blueberry in that you wouldn't likely use it on every song like you weuld an overdrive. It's priced similar (too high) yet people keep buying them, even with clones abound.

WHY?

Well for one thing, anyone who wants one can buy one. And in my regional area here there are several stores that carry them.

Anyway, I think that they could sell more than you think if they have the supply and distribution.

Thinking about the Wooly Mammoth and how much it underwhelmed me does actually give me pause when thinking about the MP BBBOD. Granted, I was using a clone (but it was very well-made) and my main bass at the time was active (I have since changed it to an active/passive preamp). But I definitely felt that the price and the hype did not add up to the performance of the pedal in ways that I was expecting. I found that I liked the Chunk Systems Brown Dog fuzz much more, but that it had a bad case of buzzy bypass with my active bass which would get better/worse (but never go away) when playing with the controls (although they were touted to have true-bypass, but that is another story...).

In any event, I'll probably be holding off on the MP BBBOD until some start popping up on the used market for ~$140 or under; and only once I have heard some clips and decided that I like it.

Off-topic: I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed bypass issues with the Chunk stuff. And I don't play active basses!

I noticed that same issue (among a whole slew of other issues) with an Octavius Squeezer that I owned for a very brief period of time.

Semi-On-Topic:
In that same vein, are there any issues that anyone knows about with Mad Professor gear, possibly that is common amongst all of the pedals they make?

Yeah for sure the mammoth doesn't work with actives. Also not with my old Guild B302 with honkin pickups. I like it for what it does, and it's AWESOME with LP filter like a wah. I have a brown dog too that I'm test driving. I like the blend and haven't noticed a bypass issue...

I'm getting a blueberry for sure, my quest for the "on for the whole song" OD is still going. I'm really digging the clips I've heard so far. I'm thinking about a dark driving too - but there's a wait list. Not sure I want to go down that road if blueberry is ready in just another month. But for sure the dark driving is cool looking and simple - and the paint job really tugs at my love for space related imagery (just look at my avatar)

Agreed. It's also quite strange... They said right on their Facebook page that it was going to be "the same price as the other guitar overdrives." Maybe Mad Ape just has their wires crossed? Maybe I'll give it a couple days and post that link on their FB and see what they say.

If that IS the right price, I'll certainly be thinking twice about getting one. I'll be first to admit that I've lusted after a Blueberry for a long time now, but $300+ for a "mass produced" circuit board version? I've got several awesome overdrives already and have a couple customs on the way. Maybe I'll just stick with those, thanks.

Disappointed. :hmm:
