Made in Japan indicates that the guitars were made by the Fujigen factory. When Fender changed factories, the contract with Fuji required the change in wording to Crafted in Japan. I have 3 MiJ and have played CIJs and they are of like quality, very high
I was going to respond in much the same way, but include Dyna Gakki with Fujigen in terms of being "MIJ", though I'm not 100% certain. Those two were exclusive at first (as part of the Hoshino and Yamano contracts signed with Fender), and then later on they started to sub out things like necks or bodies - perhaps entire instruments - to additional factories and that's when the CIJ label started.Made in Japan indicates that the guitars were made by the Fujigen factory. Well, almost. I have a 100% authentic JB75RI that came to me directly via DHL from the Land of the Rising Sun which bears an "MIJ" decal on the headstock and a "CIJ" decal on the neck heel. An exceptional instrument in every way...whether it was M'd or C'd over there under license to FMIC.Nail on the head.
Are there any technical differences between these two? And no, I don't mean the timeline. I mean why are American and Mexican built ones have Made in USA and Made in Mexico while the basses built in China for example have Crafted in China label on them?
Apple is the one that cracks me up...

CIA (Crafted in Japan) vs MIJ (Made in Japan).
I kinda always wonder what the difference was to.
Not really sure if it applies, but back when I was a kid "made in Japan" carried a negative image of inferior products., Maybe this attitude influenced the marketing people at Fender?
For the most part I guess your correct.. Ibanez, and other brands were popular back then, but I think some prople from my generation, and earlier generations were still sceptical of products made in Japan, and were still a big part of the target demographic... Pure speculation on my partI think by the time Fender outsourced to Japan, the Japanese were already 'made' and universally respected for the quality of their manufacturing.
I've got another one to add: Our 2012 Subaru says on one of the rear windows "Proudly Assembled in Indiana"
Keep in mind it says "assembled", and the components assembled could have been made ANYWHERE. Also, this label probably only pertains to your window, and nothing else.I've got another one to add: Our 2012 Subaru says on one of the rear windows "Proudly Assembled in Indiana"
