At the same time, while I agree with you, what exactly is the harm in wearing a shirt with an American Flag on it?

I didn't say that there was any harm in wearing a US flag shirt, as long as any other flag is allowed. If only US flags were allowed, that would probably be considered racist, and if I was at that school, I would certainly protest that 'one rule for one...' attitude, even if I had no interest in wearing a US flag or any other flag.

there's nothing pc about it, from what i've read in numerous sources. read about that school, and the administrator, mrs. heather ruiz - the one who ripped mic off the student and who told him to change his shirt. the population is nearly 70% hispanic, mostly illegals, and 30% non-hispanic. the point, according to a few student blogs on the topic that i've seen, was to humiliate the white boy in order to not offend the mexican illegals. apparently they've lowered the american flag out front of this school and raised the mexican one on numerous occasions.

I don't see what the problem is here really. According to the article, the dress code did not allow "shirts/blouses that promote specific races, cultures, or ethnicities". Let's face it - a shirt with the American flag all over it is promoting a 'race, culture or ethnicity'. So he WAS in breach of the dress code, and therefore deserved the DCV shirt.

Now I realise that you Americans are in general a lot more patriotic than the average Brit (and I am a lot less patriotic than most), and probably think that the US flag should be an exception to that particular rule in the dress code, but the way I see it, if the dress code for the school says it, then that is the rule.

And if you are going to allow the American flag, how can you make it the only exception? Surely you have to then allow any flag? The article seemed to imply that if you were Mexican or Chinese you could get away with your flag, but what about anyone else?

I'm not saying that anyone in an American school will be offended by an American flag. I quoted the school rules, and pointed out that the teacher was actually following the rules which were part of the school dress code.

Whether or not the rule is 'correct' is a totally separate issue - but how could you allow students to wear US flags, and not any other flags? What about students who were born in America to native Chinese parents, who feel as much allegiance to China as they do America? Can they not celebrate their race and heritage just because it does not fit in with the patriotic American ideal?

EDIT: Oh, and China is just an example - you can substitute it for any other country if you wish.
