major rabbit problem

yeah...i wondered about this...because in oklahoma rabbit season is close right now. Are they feral?
Theyre edible this time of year but use gloves when you clean them to be safe from tularemia (rabbit fever). If theyve got a spotty liver (i think) burn em.
(dont quote me on that...some other hunter might be able to help on the rabbit fever ID)

I'm not sure about the rabbit fever, but I too have heard that rabbit is definitely good eatin'.


Shotguns would tear them up too much at close range unless its a very, very light load. If you're not a good shot, however, I would go for the light loaded shotgun over the .22. Rabbits are not the smartest animals, but most of them do know to disappear when there's a loud noise and one of their brethen beings to jerk and jump and hop madly.

Very simple, spend a night trapping.
a .22 would be fine, but it might take some time. You'd only get a few of them before the rabbits knew the word was out and after that, you might as well give up. If you were spotlighting you could get a few more but then again, it wouldnt be very productive.
You would have more success trapping.
Lay a kit of traps about 3pm, retire for the evening. Have a bbq dinner, then go out and check the traps about 11pm. Re-set as needed.
If the problem is as bad as you say, you should have at least 8 pair in the morning no troubles.

The only thing about this though...you have to kill at least 99 rabbits (And that last one better not be pregnant) or she'll just have the same problem in a year or less. I don't think the problems going to go away unless she's takes major steps.

Because thats a hell of a lot of bunnies to trap and a hell of a lot of bunnies to feed and a hell of a lot of bunnies to sell.

I doubt he'd be able to deal with so many.

Theres a reason for phrases like:

"!@#$%#$!% like rabbits"

My buddy has one.

Im sure there is demand for rabbits but not crazy intense demand because they just reproduce and end up taking over your area and then they get loose and infect your other animals with disease and then you have to go out there and shoot them to protect you plants and animals.

Heh. Yeah, depending on the weather in dude's area, releasing a bunch various monitors like Niles (which are big, mean ****ers) and bigass Tegus like the ones from Chile and Argentina, and just let them go to town for a few days.

As i think about it more and more, a gun would not be the answer to the problems. It would be fun, yes it would. This situation calls for... THE REAL ULTIMATE POWER. yes, that is right. I think that i will go stealth on the bunnies using assasination-esque tactics. Tie them up with little zipties and whatnot. Hell, it would give me an excuse to wear my black spandex and ninja mask. And the usage of nightvision goggles, my friend has a pair of them, mil-spec and everything. Pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Well, thanks alot, these are all pretty good ideas thus far.
I think that i will wait for winter to roll around before i do anything. That way, some wil have died from the cold, and their coats will be much thicker and nice so if i decide to keep the pelts, they would be nicer.

Rabbit meat is very good, hope their livers arent all spotty.

Once you trap them, humanely dispose of them. You may think it's "sport" but it's not, especially around a house. Besides, one guy with a gun< a hundred or so rabbits hiding from the one guy with a gun. Rabbits win.

It'd be different if it were just one or two rabbits.

Just keep trappin'.

BTW .22 can be pretty vicious. Any reason the US military adopted the 5.56mm (.223)?

Yes, .22 can kill but there's no comparison with the power of .223, which in itself is not that powerful of a cartridge. There's a lot more to a cartridge than bullet diameter. If it were just about bullet diameter than a .32 would be more powerful than a .270! .22 is definitely not considered a relatively "vicious" round in the gun world.
