ugh... dont get me started on the 5.56mm (.223) bullet. It is great for varmit shooting, but someone would be foolish to take a deer with it, as it has little stopping power and is not even legal to hunt big game with in most states. If this is true, then why do they insist on giving our troops that round? And the bullets they get are FMJ at that, not even a hollow point. the only thing that FMJs could, and often do, is just punch through a person. Only if the shooter is lucky enough to hit something vital does the bullet cause someone to not be able to fire anymore, instantley. I am just praying that they give our soldiers the new berretta uppers for the m-16, which uses the 6.8mm round, much more stopping power.

major rabbit problem

I believe the United States use of non-hollow point rounds is because we decided to adhere to a treaty that we did not sign. I think we adhere to it to be in line with the UN. Either way I have a hard time believing that it hasn't cost lives.
"Stopping power" is a meaningless term IMO. Whether the person stops or not often depends more on the person than the shooter or the round. Although I do agree that we should convert to a more potent round.

Agreed. While we should try to avoid firing shots, they need to be shot sometimes and once the shot is fired its clear that something had to be done. Might as well make the shot count.
There's a big difference between the entry wound of a 5.56mm round and the exit wound. (as with most weapons) You do know there's a big difference between the NATO 5.56 and a .22LR. The only thing they share is the diameter of the projectile.
Im guessing that the charge that fire the bullets they are using in these .22 you guys are talking about is much larger than what was in the rifle I was shooting
Are we really concerned about "stopping power" in reference to shooting rabbits? Hit one w/ a 22LR, even a 22Mag, & I think you'll see the rabbit stop... ROFLMAO, the thought just cracks me up!
Using cats to try to police the rabbits up is a bad idea, only because you'll soon be over run w/ cats,, instead of rabbits.
Using some form of "varminting" dog,,, such as a Dachsund could be good. I'd worry about the durability of that breed, if they have to fend off coyotes.
Trapping over 100 rabbits is too big of a task for such a passive approach. You'd never keep up w/ the rate of populace increase.
So, you either need to start shooting them, maybe use a 12ga, or you need to put a couple of predators into the environment.

Also he (or she?) says that being hit with a hollowpoint makes death "almost certain" which is incorrect. Plenty of folks have been shot with hollowpoints and lived to tell about it.

I don't think anyone was arguing that a .22 won't kill a rabbit. We went off on a tangent on the effectiveness of the .223 in combat.

maybe my experiences are wrong, i dunno. But i know for a fact that i was shooting my .223 single shot New England Firearms rifle (nice little gun for 130 bucks!) at a hunk of meat, (big thing of spoiled standing rib roast) with some FMJs and the exit hole wasnt much bigger than the entry... just a little hole that i could probably fit my thumb into. Then i went at it with my .22 WMA and blew chunks out of it with some nice little CCI maxi- mags.
Maybe it acts different in a human body, i dont really know, and i dont really want to find out, first hand.
