Making an incredibly hard desicion

Also he has a degree in music business and he says he has great contacts and the know how to take us to the next level (I must say he sells himself really well).

Is he a vocalist or a manager? Seems like he'll wind up runnin' the band.

Seems like she'll be part of the band. Based on her youtube videos, looks like she's already got a handle on some marketing skills.

Btw, who'll sing harmony with her?

Any tapes of your band with the previous vocalist available?

I don't have any speakers at work so I don't know how either sounds nor do I have any idea what kind of music you all play or why you feel that a male singer would be more marketable but its tough for me to understand how a talented and good looking female singer could be less appealing than a male singer of less abilities.

It's an apples and oranges. The girl has the talent, imho. She might not fit with a harder band. But the guy probably wouldn't be able to pull off what she can do.

How about a vid of your band?

It goes back to what kind of music are you doing. The guy is a good metal shouter, she seems more geared towards classic rock R&B and ballads. The fact she had your jaws dropped at audition should be a big plus.

like i said i have an mp3 where the guy sing and he is not that bad. The problem is that the drummer thinks that the general public is too vain and shallow and would prefer the guy.

I'm not sure what vanity has to do with anything but FWIW, I play in two bands that feature a female singer and its been my experience that everybody (male and female audiences) likes female singers better.

That is the worst kind of logic right there...

if the general public is vain and shallow then it stands to reason that they would much rather see a good looking woman up there performing.

I take it your band plays "metal" "hardcore" or some other derivative male dominated genre

Check our EP Invalid Link Removed, since then we have moved a bit more towards harder rock but with vocals that are a bit more pop

Then doesnt the idea of a female vocalist make more sense?

Im not sure why, but you seem more into the idea of a guy singing than a woman... why is that?

no we dont play metal, i think we are closer to progressive rock but it is hard to describe our sound. The EP has what we used to sound like but now we added a pop elements as well as harder and more technical stuff to our sound (not too much though). Check out our EP Invalid Link Removed

I am actually the least knowledgeable member of the band in terms of what is needed to be done to "make it", at least i make up for it with my playing (sorry don't mean to sound cocky) lol. The drummer usually reads a lot of books and does research about the music industry so he tends to have a stronger opinion about the matter so i am basically forwarding his point of view.

Your link is blocked at work, so I cant listen right now...

Id say from a marketability standpoint, a female vocalist who can sing well is much more marketable, for obvious reasons. (If its not obvious: The chicks want to be her, the guys want to be with her!)
Trust me, Im in marketing! Hmm, another question... where abouts are you guys from?

Something just isn't right here?

Yeah, they are listening to the drummer.

OP, this a no brainer. Whatever you think you are as a band right now may change. Hopefully it will because evolving and growing is what we should all strive for. What doesnt change is talent and she has it. He unfortunately does not. Go with talent and play music. Stop worrying about all the other BS.

I think if you could have both that would be pretty awesome combo. You guys seem to be right on the edge of a hard rock screamo thing where with mostly clean vocals and then the occasional scream it'd work out great. If I had to choose one only, for your band i'd choose the guy. It just seems like he'd work better for the feel of the music. If it were for anything else, i'd definitely pick the girl.

Ya know.....forget what i'm saying. Get the girl anyways. She is straight up great talent, and if she is that huge into being into your group then it'd be a shame to not let her in.

You're the same TBer that recently started the thread on whether your singer was really that bad, right?

If so, I can only assume you decided to part ways with your old singer.

I remember listening to tracks of your band in that thread. There was a rock edge to it, but it was relatively pop in its hooks. A pretty good thing from a marketability standpoint IMO.

The guy singer would move your band towards a harder edged/screamo sound. If that's what you want, go with him. I think it would destroy what I like about your music, but that's your call.

But your music has plenty of room for a good singer and some interesting harmonies and the woman would push you towards being a bit more pop. If that's what you want, go with her.

Personally I think what he would add is easier to see and a bit (IMO) more generic. What she would add takes a bit more imagination but I think it would be much more interesting and give you a larger possible range not to mention better marketability. I see it as a no brainer really.

Just my $0.02

Something just isn't right here?

Yeahhhh my thought exactly. I don't want to judge, but it sounds like your band is not aligned on what you all want. If/when it's time for a booking agent and manager, ideally members of the band shouldn't fill that role anyway (you're all too busy practicing, writing, rehearsing, writing, right?) Bands who need a manager or an agent, need someone dedicated to that task IMO.

To me, if the chick fills the need in the sound you guys have agreed upon, that's the first test. Then work ethic, which I agree with the above post. She showed huge initiative and preparedness. I'd take that over connections any day. Then comes creativity - see if you can write a song together (if you're original) or rewrite a tribute tun with your guys. THEN and only then comes looks. But make sure you're all prize winning studs before you go digging into to either of the candidates' looks. The prettiest of chicks or dudes can't save the other guys if the rest of youse are gnarly. If that's the case, rock the ugly but with great music.:D
