Mandantory Drug Tests

It's a tough one to get into, just because it's hard to distinguish between those who can't work, and those that won't work.

I know plenty of people in my home town who are capable of working, but choose not to because they get more money doing nothing. Heck, knew a girl in high school who's ambition was to get pregnant after she left school so she would get given a council house and more than enough money to live on!

Yep, leaving school and getting pregnant is more a career choice. The fact that some are better off not working is indicative of the wage scenario here, minimum wage does not pay for a life, just an existence.

What are your opinions on people recieving Medicaid/section 8 housing/ebt card, getting drug tested, and giving 8 hrs of community service a week. This is something I could really stand behind.

I think this is just another excuse to avoid welfare reform. The welfare system already does not have the necessary checks and balances in place to stop individuals from taking advantage, let alone those who are receiving assistance after imigrating illegally or through quasi-legal means. I have never supported the current welfare system and will not untillit is torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. sorry to get on my soapbox, but after years of working on low income housing( I used to be a contracter) I've seen how many people are just using the system to contune to be lazy and a be detriment to society. you want to use drugs... fine, get a job and pay your own bills and taxes, then I don't care what you do.

My opinion is (get ready for this): Drug tests: Yes. Alcohol tests: Yes. If you need my money to survive, or for your kids to survive, don't be spending my money on getting f'edd up.

Another thing: Yes to fingerprinting welfare recipients. Not because they are criminals, most of them are not. But to avoid fraud, which there is a lot of.

Over here in the USA, they have TV shows about women who do this. For some, it seems to be a badge of honor to pump out a half dozen or more kids, then collect the welfare and not work.

It must be a new career path. :scowl:

I agree.

I think we need to make things as uncomfortable as possible for those on welfare/food stamps, to make the alternative (getting off them) better, and thereby reduce the strain on the system.

Same here, perpetual cycle of the morally bankrupt, the children don't actually witness what a normal productive family situation is, this in effect cycles that thinking, it's wrong on many levels, especially for the kids involved.

A good few teachers I know felt that most of these parents considered that school teachers should be surrogate parents, and it was their responsibility to correct very basic issues that should have been addressed by basic parenting, it was a big factor in many considering alternate careers.

im tired of working with lazy good for nothing stoners. at least drunks get their work done, pay for their habit honestly, buy it from our store and then get hammered on their own time.

Hey, im a drunk and a stoner. I do my job better than anyone here, being the reason they promoted me. Screw their drug tests, I was able to pass mine. Why is what I do with my own time any different than what a drunk does with theirs? I'm certainly not taking any money from the gov. Im paying my taxes, and aside from smoking a little herb, am still a productive member of society.

Maybe they should raise minimum wage and lower welfare benefits, reverse the incentive, so that more people would rather work at Burger King then take handouts.

In case you care about who's spending your money, how about drug and alcohol tests for anybody who benefits from a government subsidy?

Raising the minimum wage does nothing to combat poverty.

But may be an incentive? It's a tricky question full stop, there are those who take advantage of benefits, there are those whom need the help. Unfortunately a few rotten apples (and increasing) spoil the barrel, I wouldn't feel it fair to tar everyone with the same brush, that's to easy. There are many different reasons why people may need the support, poor education, family background, unemployment statistics. Students are coming out of University with little prospect in the current job market and $31,700+ student debt to start with.

But regardless of random drug testing, the capable definitely should be involved in some kind community work, if only for their own self image, it certainly wouldn't hurt anyone, that's for sure ; )
