Marcus Miller clone alert!!

He's terrific - thanks for sharing the vids. I know how this may sound, but I'd really like to hear the guy play... bass. It can sometimes be easy to forget that a cat like Marcus Miller did an awful lot of grooving behind an awful lot of artists before getting to do his own thing.

I'd love to hear this guy in, say, five-six years, after he's finished sowing his oats and has perhaps played with some heavyweights in a true rhythm section capacity.

Terrific drummer, BTW.

I think you can differentiate between peter muller and marcus miller, either through a blindtest or whatever, im a marcus miller freak and for someone who listens to his recordings everyday, i felt like i really know him.

the way marcus compose things is very matured, ive listened to peter muller and kenji, to be honest kenji has his own sound, and his own style in composing. Peter is a little bit raw,but Marcus, as you know, is just right in everything.

"Music Store Chops" could be defined as someone who can mimic a line without understanding what they are doing. I call it "Polly Wanna Cracker" bass because a parrot has no idea of what they're saying, they just know that they will get fed when they do that. The Bass Player has no idea of what he's playing, he just knows when he plays that lick at GC he draws a crowd-but he can't get a gig because all he can say is the musical equivalent of "Polly Wanna Cracker"....
If you can hold down a gig with a working touring band (like say, Casiopea) that's probably not Music Store Chops or Polly Wanna Cracker bass....JMO

Ha, that's funny, I've never heard that.
I should have phrased that differently I guess, because I have very high respect for Casiopeia. In the early 80s I used to play a few of their tunes with my band and they were a lot of fun and quite a challenge.
But that clip with the dueling bass players doing open E funk cliches may have been something they throw in just because people really like it, but from a musical standpoint I still think that I could hear the identical thing every time I walk into a Guitar Center anywhere in the US.
Fun to do, I like doing it myself but not as exiting anymore as it was 20 years ago.:bassist:

What was exceptional becomes commonplace. Case in point: Here's some of the material my College Freshman and Sophomores are working on in lessons:
Maestros de los Freqencias Bajos-SMV
Milano-SMV
Thunder-SMV
Bach-Jeff Berlin
Donna Lee-Jaco transcription (not the TAB-he's transcribing it himself)
Run for Cover-Marcus Miller
I Believe It-Alain Caron w/Uzeb
Slam the Clown-Alain Caron
Well, you get the idea. That Bass Duel was likely from the early 90s, about the time that Bass Gods of Japan was a feature in BP. I'm sure these guys are nothing but better considering the clip is nearly 20 years old....

I will remember that! I have been guilty as charged. That's why I have started taking lessons again.;)

Boy, I wish I could be a freshman in your class!But I'm 54 and I might look a little out of place. Besides your kids might just humiliate me more that my fragile ego can take.:hiding:

They get really good really young these days. If I ever think I can play I just go hang out at Vic's Bass and Nature Camp until I come to my senses....Everybody there plays great! Sheesh!

I'd rather listen to an older, experienced player than to some kid who has a zillion chops but little actual music coming out of his fingers. If you're focusing that much on chops at such an early stage, you probably don't understand or respect the role of the bass, and I'm not really interested in listening to that. :)

Trust me, most of the Bass and Nature Campers do have the Groove as well as the Chops! Amazing stuff for the most part.
