Marcus Miller is 100% right!

SBL is clickbait - they're a multimillion dollar venture at this point and creating small bites and out-of-context pseudo-controversial statements is how they got to that status.

Aside from that, Marcus has written several top 5 singles as well as a Number 1 hit outside of his career as a bandleader. Stuff he wrote still gets clubs bumping to this day.

Anything he says about songwriting is something I'm going to listen to and seriously consider.

It is hard to image a more complete musician than Marcus Miller, especially given high degree of formal training. He knows the street, the studio, and concert hall, like very few. His opinion is worth very serious consideration.

Ultimately I presume you care since you've taken the time to quote two of my posts saying that you couldn't understand my distaste for clickbait.

I must be clear that I don't find a potted summary to be a bad thing, but I don't like clickbait that is sensational and not representative of the overall point. The long form exists, thankfully, but as always, the masses can be deceived by only reading the headlines. That isn't good for an informed discourse on the whole.

Take Scott Devine, the clickbait master, for example. He never really says anything sucks, if you take the time to watch his videos. However he used titles like 'six string basses suck' etc because it works the viewer. However, as I have previously stated, a lot of viewers are happy to dig no deeper than the short clip without context or the misrepresented headline.

Please don't be condescending. It's not a good way to talk to someone. I understand the concept of distaste for "clickbait," although that's not what you were talking about. You were specifically talking about short form videos. That may or may not constitute "clickbait," so let's not get it twisted. My point, which you are implicitly misrepresenting, is not that I somehow like clickbait (or short form content), but that it's nothing new, and by diverting the conversation to the medium rather than the content you are identifying a "problem" that is as old as civilization. Those of us who think we are intelligent should have the skills and knowledge to dig deeper rather than sit around and complain about it.

You probably know the story - MM was NYC based as a kid and was on the All State orchestra as a clarinetist for years. Those kids can read down Charles Ives like you and I eat our lunch.

The man is a national treasure. One particularly unusual fact that a lot of people don't know is that he had an infection or scarlet fever as a child and is deaf in his right ear.

Marcus is a huge inspiration for me. He's very much a "see the big picture" type and has left a huge mark with his compositions, producing, being a side-man and leading his own band.

I totally get what Marcus is saying and I also agree that he's probably mostly referring to smooth jazz. I think there are examples in that genre where you can hear there's a composition, complete with a bassline, etc., only instead of a sax or guitar player the melody, as is more common in the genre, a bass plays the melody. I think bass sounds great as a melodic instrument but, if I'm going to be honest, probably not better than a sax or guitar. I'm trying to imagine what it would sound like if Marcus played the melody on the Bob James/David Sanborn classic "Maputo" on the bass. It's hard to imagine and I doubt it would be better than the version with David Sanborn playing the melody. On the other hand, using Marcus's example of the Stanley Clarke anthem "Lopsy Lu", I've heard sax players and others play the melody to Lopsy Lu. It doesn't sound better to me. It's truly a bass melody!

I know the topic is a little abstract but good topic!

As I've mentioned in other threads, name players and recognized industry figures do come here but don't post or engage for the obvious reasons. This is quite common. Please believe that many a laugh has been had.

Not completely a TB flaw, as this forum is merely a mirror of the society and culture that it is part of.

This really stuck with me from his SBL interview.

Just saw the video.

I heard him emphasize the importance of celebrating what is unique about a bass guitar when considering the kind of music to write specifically for bass guitar.

His premise makes sense to me. Can't find fault with his words on this video.
