Mario Music (video games)

there are some amazing composers in the Mario Bros. universe. And the games themselves are very musical in nature. This absolutely contributed to my musical training growing up.

Now, my kids are playing the new Mario games, and the music is nothing if not better! Cool arrangements of the old themes, plus some awesome new tunes. Really fun stuff.

Yoshi's Wooly World also has some super groovy basslines! MIDI or not, here they come!

Good stuff. Just thought I'd share. :)

One of my band's guitarists and I bonded over the fact that our biggest songwriting influences were video games, particularly the Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, and Final Fantasy series. There's actually a growing group of metal musicians in particular who wear those influences on their sleeves, I can post examples if people want, but it's very much underrated and overlooked as a genre and I think as more generations grow up with video games we're going to see more of those influences manifesting.

Give this thread a listen! I found a fantastic big band arrangement of the overworld theme.

Super Mario Bros - Big Band

Definitely an overlooked and under-appreciated genre. They really get some talented people to write and arrange that stuff.

I remember a few years ago the LA Philharmonic did a concert version of, I think, Mario Bros music and Zelda. I thought it was super cool of them to recognize and pay tribute to such great music. Sadly, I was not able to attend.

Misha from Periphery is one of those talented artists I referred to earlier who's cited video game composers - Nobuo Uematsu in this case - as his biggest influences.

Here's one of his solo compositions. Tell me you don't hear some Final Fantasy in here, especially from around 0:55 on.

Yoko Shimomura is one of my favorite composers, and she's known for her work on Legend of Mana, the Final Fantasy Series and the Kingdom Hearts series. She's phenomenal.

Sound quality on this isn't the best, but I wanted to point out the fact that she has been performed by symphonies more than once.

Dave Wise (Donk Kong Country series and reboot) is a totally different type of composer, but similarly phenomenal.
I mean check this out:

Also:

I could go on about these two (and others!) but the point is if you like composers, you owe it to yourself to do some searches on video game composers. Some fo the best new symphonic arrangements I've heard come from games- they have the settings to use a symphony and the budgets to hire composers to compose epic pieces.

Edit: Can't ge the youtube links to display as links and not full windows, sorry about that.

There is a lot of amaing music in video games and even in the 8bit or 16bit area. I did a cover a of a few there from Final Fantasy.

This one isn't a cover but the actual music in the game :

There is some of my fav cover :
