Markbass Megathread PART 2

Status
Not open for further replies.
I went to Guitar Center tonight to try out the LMII once again. I've decided that it's perfect for my needs and I love the tone. It does an amazing job of translating a generally uncolored tone of the bass used. Would it be appropriate to ask for cab recommendations in the Megathread or should I start a new thread?
Nah, it fits here since it's still about the Markbass stuff...

IMHO, pretty much any cab works well with these. Just pick what you normally gravitate towards... 10's, 12's, mixes, maybe a 15 with 10's and/or 12's. Whatever. One of the things I like most about the LMII is it pretty much sounds great with everything, and IMHO, not all heads do.

I would like a cab with smooth highs and a tight bottom. While I'm no master, I do slap, double thump, and two hand tap a significant amount in addition to finger style. I would like to keep the cost to $600 or lower. Unless I run into a ridiculous deal that I can not pass up, I rather not get a 410. Next year I'll be off to college and dorms aren't very spacious. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

With those specs, I'm fairly partial to the Epifani UL310, but it'll be hard to find one under 600. Maybe a nice 210 cab?

OK, I've read the whole thread, and its previous mego monster thread.

I definitely want the SA450 over the LMII. I love semi parametric mid eq's and the extra features against size/price seem like the right trade off for me.

I've played through the MB cabs (2x10 and 1x15, both front ported), and thought it all sounded pretty damn good. However those GS112's look really portable compared to a 1x15, and that's a pretty big consideration for me right now. Plus they look like very good value for money:-

Can someone give me an idea of the difference in sound between them (ie 2x8 ohm GS112's) and the Markbass cabs please??

Thanks!

No, the SD800 is digital where as the LMII, LMK and SA450 (to name but three) arent.

I believe the F1 is closer to the SD800's power section.

From the Mark Bass Site: This notation is only under the SA450 and SD800.
All models are equipped with Markbass-designed digital power supply circuitry.

Ken pm'd. He was kind enough to point out that "digital" doesn't always mean Class D. So, Ken agrees with you that the two class D amps are the SD800 and F1 only. I did not care for the SD800 at least with the gear I have.

I can't directly comment on the Aggie 112s, but I really liked how they played when I tried them at GC, but no direct gigging experience. But if you haven't seen that thread about the Epi UL112 x 2 setup being enough, I think you should check that out. I also have a UL112x2 setup and find myself in a similar predicament. I love the way they sound, but they don't project like my Markbass 410 in the mix.

Yeah, i knew there was more to it, i just couldnt remember the right words.
I was very, very close to getting a SD800 instead of a LMII but after reading your views and Kens i felt the warmth of the LMII (and of course my SA450) would also suit me better.

Yes, power SUPPLY is not the same as power AMP.
All of our power supplies are digital (switching mode) except for the Classic 300 (analog). Only the SD800 and the F1 use a Class D power amp.
The Classic 300 has a tube power amp. All the rest are analog power amps.

I think I'd like to mod the LM II DI so it's pre-EQ.

I understand it's a very simple fix and I think Markbass even sent someone here instructions on how to do it.

My question is since Markbass is sending users the info for doing the mod, does anyone know if doing it yourself voids the GC warranty?

I have heard a lot about Markbass and I dig the light weight cabs and amps. I've never played one so I have to ask a very important question to me that has probably been asked somewhere before. Is Markbass good for R&B/Funk?Hip-Hop music? I know it's got to be pretty good for Jazz cause I see quite a few exceptional Jazz bassist playing them, but if anyone has any experience with them in R&B Gospel and Hip-Hop, please let me know.

Im not sure MB are just sending it out to whoever asks for it.
I know i was sent it from another TB user last year and i have forwarded it on to others who have also done this. I have no idea who the person was and where it came from but i remeber emailing Marco about this mod and he said i had to take the amp to the shop to get them to do it as they dont give out this sort of info.
I would also think that as its such an easy mod you could always change it back before taking the head back if you had to. As long as you dont mess the screw heads up i cant see how anyone would know yo uhave opened the unit.
IMHO of course.

I had a pictorial description in part one of this thread. It's trivially easy, requiring only moving mini-jumpers around, so I seriously doubt it'd void any warranty.

Yep. I've played it in the blues band (and will be doing so again next Friday) and it was great... completely worthy, and a joy to use as usual.

It's perfect for that vibe. I kind of live in the funk/R&B sort of thing, but TBer Vision does exactly the type of gigs you are talking about. PM him to get the scoop! He's an Epi/J Bass/MTD funk/gospel player.
