Married gear addicts: How do you do it?

I just became a married gear addict last thursday. The reason I'm now a married gear addict, as opposed to simply a gear addict, is that my wife (still not used to saying or writing that) is totally cool with my gear. Even bought me a Sterling 5 HS as a wedding gift. I have about 20 basses, but I buy them responsibly. And I'd sell most of em in a second if I ever had to.

Hey Joe,

Congrats....I remember seeing the bass she bought you on the ebforums...how did you decide to commemorate it as your "engagement" bass?

I've been happily married to my wife for over 8 years, and have known her almost my whole life. We love each other very much, and while she is moderately supportive of my musical "hobby"(her words), nothing sets her off more than when I ask to buy a piece of gear. This is frustrating for me because I am the sole financial provider for my family(1 daughter, 1 wife) so I would think that I could have a little bit of wiggle room as far as asking for money to buy something goes.

I've seen some of your posts and pictures....... some people have accumulate a mass of gear. I have an Ampeg 1975 810, a modern Ampeg 810, an Ampeg SVT-CL, some pedals, and a Fender P-bass. I'm jealous, so I must know; how do you do it?

Do it lightly with a big stick.
Just like Teddy.
Be prepared to run if that don't work tho'.

In my case the wife has a liking for the Yamaha SG & Gibson Les Paul. Every time I get something she gets one of the aforementioned guitars. It works both ways. For instance, If I sell something, she will too.

She has 2 Gibson Les Pauls & 2 Yamaha SG's.
She has a Sovtek Mig 100 and 2 X Marshall 1960 cabs. She also has an old tube Alamo combo that sounds pretty rad as well.

I have an Ibanez Telebass & 2 Fender Jazz's.
I have a Jcm 800 bass series, Fender Bassman 300 pro, Mesa road ready 15, and Genz Benz 610T XB2.

A couple of years ago I ordered a Steinberger Spirit double neck bass & six from MusicYo. It took a while to get after the order but I finally recieved an email from them that it was on the way. I came home from work one day to find my wife - who is very supportive of my playing - standing by the answering machine. She said " Hey, listen to this" and hit play. There was a message from the delivery people that there was an $80-some-odd customs charge and that my guitar would be delivered that Friday between 2 and 4 p.m.Cash only. She asks if I had bought another guitar. I tell her yes I have. She then says that maybe next time I can bring home my next new guitar or bass in a C3 Corvette....for her. She used to have a 78 Indy Pace Car Corvette. I'm thinking this is a Win-Win situation ! A new axe and a Corvette? Thankfully, she was just joking !

I've put a roof over my family's head for 24 years by playing bass. As long as my purchase isn't taking food out of their mouths, or the college fund, or whatever - it's not even a question.

My wife and I make about the same $$. Together, we make enough that I can buy and sell basses occasionally and not worry about it. But I generally buy and sell basses in the $300 and under price range....and I generally sell one when I buy one. If I'm going to spend more, I talk with her about it first.

Amps? I have a Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0 with a 12" and a 2x10 cab. That was a significant purchase, but it was my Christmas present from her last year. I don't plan to EVER sell or trade that G-B. It does everything I'll ever need.

Pretty easy for me.

First off my wife is a musician and she is completely supportive of my musical pursuits.

Secondly, I really don't suffer much from GAS. I don't lust for, or care to own, more than the minimal amount necessary to do what I want and need to do. Moreover, we just don't make enough money to sink into music gear or, in fact, any other leisure pursuits really. Due to a job loss at the end of 2009 (I was only unemployed for five months, but we made a cross-country move during that time) we don't even have anything in savings or retirement anymore.

Thirdly, I realize full well that there are "wants" in life (such as basses and bass gear and other musical ephemera) and "needs." It is a simple thing for me to subjugate my wants for the very real needs of my family. And I don't feel like I'm missing a thing.
