Matching headstock poll

Depends ...

I like contrast between the fretboard and the body. Maple with dark bodies, rosewood or ebony with light bodies. That means there will be a contrast between the matched headstock and the fretboard. Sometimes not so good.

I don't like them with maple fretboards.
Some colors are better than others with rosewood or ebony.

Matching headstocks is really low on my priority list.

I can't see the headstock when playing for the most part. It's like dots vs blocks vs whatever on the fretboard. As long as there's side dots for reference when I lose my mind and place, nothing much else matters.

It's all bass to bass for me. I like matching headstocks, I like wood ones, I like solid color headstocks that while maybe a different color than the body, match saaaay the pickguard or hardware. I have all three!

• YES! if neck wood is light and fretboard is dark
• NO! if fretboard is maple
• EITHER! if neck wood and fretboard are both dark

For fender type bases… i dont want the headstock painted to match the body. Because: fender type bass. True story: i once had a fender with matching headstock. I sold it.

for my ricenbackers: 100% must be matching. Because: rickenbacker. True story: all my rickenbackers have matching headstocks. Never sold any of them.

Other basses can go either way . Because i have no historically based expectations. Example: longhorn without matching headstock… not sure what to do with it.

Pretty simple. All exceptions to rics and fender type bases and my headstock rules deserve to be firewood and will make your fingers fall off if you play them.

I have a very specific set of of criteria for headstocks:

1) matches the body finish
2) matches the fretboard (all maple, all wenge, etc.)
3) darker than both the body and the fretboard. (Warwick with black headstock)

Or maybe it would be simpler to say, I dislike a dark fretboard on a light colored neck. (Basically 50% of fenders)

I never gave it much thought. But last band Singer & lead guitar made a Big deal about them! I didnt realize most of my basses have painted, matching head stocks! the singer made a real big deal about it! I guess I subconsciously liked them because I have a bunch in my collection. Although I never acquired a bass just because!or have they been a deal maker/breaker. After that stint in that band I started to notice them. So i guess I like them, but I dont seek them out!
I've started a couple of Warmoth builds and have decided to finish the headstocks Black, because thats easiest!, My friend bought laminated tops for his guitars on ebay, but I think its easier to dyeor paint them instead of gluing a laminate. So yes I like Painted headstocks!

Personally, I like matching my headstocks to my pickguards.

The only thing I don't like is a rosewood fretboard with a natural maple headstock. That "tuxedo" look, however classic it may be, is stale and dated to me. Maple fretboards look great with the natural headstock though!
