Meatbox reissue, huh?

If anyone can't get a meatbox but wants the same effect you can get it from an Eventide H9 with the octave algorithm.

But I wouldn't recommend buying a h9 just for that ☺

The H9 is amazing and I've never owned a Meatbox, but is the -2 sub octave in the Octaver algorithm really comparable to what the Meatbox does?

Interesting. You would think it would sound better since it appears to be made from better components.

I wish this SMD vs. THD thing would just die, it is complete voodoo.

Interesting, I was unaware that the H9 had a sub-harmonic synthesizer, or that it could run more than one algo at a time. It would have to run both an octaver and a sub harmonic synth.

I used to have a Meatbox, don't anymore unfortunately, I was just not using it. I have H9s as well. It all depends on what you have to play it through. On a normal amp with a normal cab, it might be "close" and sound similar. Send it all to a real subwoofer and you'll see the differences between a meatbox and the H9's octaver. Don't get me wrong, the H9 Octaver gets plenty deep and stuff and it may sound "the same" for some uses, but there is definitely a difference.

Well, it doesn't run more than one at a time, here is a description of the algorithm:

Octavers traditionally use analog techniques to track the pitch of the input audio signal and synthesize a signal whose musical tone is an octave lower than the original.

Octaver™ creates a pair of sub-harmonics, one an octave below the note that you’re playing and the other two octaves below. It also adds an Octave FUZZ generator. The sub-harmonics can be filtered and the filters modulated by the input audio level. Octaver is a parallel (dual mono) rather than stereo effect.

My biggest beef with it is its difficult for someone like myself to work on the circuits. So IMO full size components are better.

Can you comment on changing the value of R4 (IIRC) to a different value to increase the unity gain capability?

Pulling an SMD component is pretty trivial. Soldering them back in is where things get difficult.

That said I'm surprised you guys are having so many issues with unity. The Meatbox gets plenty loud, much louder than unity IME. I have to wonder if your cabs are having issues reproducing the low sub notes at sufficient volume. Just for fun I plugged the Meatbox into my practice guitar amp and it was basically inaudible. Try going direct to PA and see if there still issues getting enough volume.

I agree, my Meatbox is massively loud through my LDS 15/6 and when I DI it, I have the gain on my mixer barely up.

You guys must have a different oedal than mine and we are talking about the dry signal it is unity at about 80 percent.

It's really hard to tell what "unity" would be on the meatbox. I run the sub and low around 4 oclock and the octave at maybe 11 or noon. If I go much as 1 oclock on the output I need to REALLY watch. And that's already pushing it very hard.

Not really. There really isn’t a “dry signal” level. So, yeah....

The octave has the most effect over perceived “dry” or “output” volume. But all the pots interact with how the actual LEVEL control acts on it.

So when the octave control is at zero there is still octave signal going through the pedal?

So there is a boost in the signal past 12:00 o'clock?

This would have to be one of the quietest pedals on the planet.
