Meatbox reissue, huh?

So the level control isnt a level control?

Yeah it is, but the other controls affect it. Think of it like a distortion pedal or amp with a gain control. If you dime the gain then you have to compensate with the master to maintain the same volume. What are you trying to accomplish with the Meatbox? And what cab are you using?

There isn't really a dry signal so that isn't really the case. What kind of tones are you looking for? The Meatbox isn't really an octave pedal in the traditional sense of the word. I know it can be a little confusing.

Ok so with the octave control all the way down there is still octave signal present? The control is labled Octave.

I use mine most of the time with no octave just a low-frequency booster for heavy parts of a song or for a bottom boost overall. Mine is second to last in the chain only to a limiter on all 3 boards. It’s been working this way for me since they came out!

Pulling an SMD component is pretty trivial. Soldering them back in is where things get difficult.

That said I'm surprised you guys are having so many issues with unity. The Meatbox gets plenty loud, much louder than unity IME. I have to wonder if your cabs are having issues reproducing the low sub notes at sufficient volume. Just for fun I plugged the Meatbox into my practice guitar amp and it was basically inaudible. Try going direct to PA and see if there still issues getting enough volume.
Entirely possible my cab is part of the issue. I'm not running the MB into a powerful PA. But still I am able to get very usable beef with just my 4x10, and so for me and others like me more signal out of the MB is important.

No octave, just clean but possibly modified by the eq controls. There is indeed a clean signal, however it is modified by the low and sub eq controls so only in that sense there is no "true" clean signal so long as those controls are not centered.

If I understand the manual with sub, low, and octave at fully counter clockwise there is zero effect happening?

I am convinced that without a proper sub setup the Meatbox is basically an inferior octave pedal. The current reissue prices are just stupid.
I choose it because is creates a sub-range signal, even from high notes, as opposed to only one or two octaves down. Any digital sub pedals out there that track better (and aren't huge and expensive)? I would definitely consider...

I've never considered the meatbox to be an "octave" pedal. I always though of it subharmonic bass synthesizer and low-end enhancer,.....which is what it is.....not an octave pedal. Even trying to use it as an octave pedal I guess could work in some ways but IMO it's simply not designed to be that. As long as I have a DI out to the FOH, I've had very favorable results.

It's NOT an octave pedal though. It gets confusing for people because it is "sort of" an octave pedal in some ways but that really isn't what it does and isn't at all what it was designed to do. If you look back through the pages and old threads it isn't uncommon for people to come here saying the pedal doesn't work, isn't loud, or doesn't do what they expect it to do.

I know I was one of those people that thought the output was whacky when I first got it. I didn't understand it. Then I asked here and Tom and a few others set me straight pretty quick. So I could see how some would think the volume/output is weak so to speak. But then it's not at all. You just have to learn the pedal and see how everything interacts with everything else. It most certainly is a unique pedal. IMO one of the most unique pedals when you think about it and what it actually is and the form factor it's in.

Not sure you read my post so I'll repeat what I said.

WITHOUT a proper sub setup, it's an inferior octave pedal that was never meant to be an octave pedal. With one, it's a really really cool sub synth that can be absolutely crushing.

Without a proper sub setup, it's not surprising that people don't like it or don't get it.

For me, I can't be freaking asked to bring subs to our gigs to make it happy.
