Mega Millions jackpot is $540 million tonight

I would pay cash for a place on an acre or two in Santa Cruz; nothing crazy, just 3-4 rooms with two small, detached rooms for a studio and such. I would have chickens, several fruit trees, other edible plants in a garden, and I would also keep bees, and maybe a couple of goats.
I would also get a BMW M3, and a Ford F150 for hauling stuff around. All that would be under 3-5 million. I would live off the interest, and volunteer my time at a local hospital.
Also, I would gift my immediate family $12,000 every year, which is the most you can give without paying taxes. I would buy my brother a house straight cash and pay out his student loans and pay for the rest of his law school. My parents own their house, but I would pay whatever they need to remodel it into their dream home.
All of that would be well under 7-8 million, including my house. I don't need much to be happy. I want marriage and children, music gear to keep me happy, and volunteering to fill my days with something positive to give back to the community.
I would probably set up a scholarship program for one student (that plays bass) from my high school that covers all of their schooling costs, wherever they choose to go, and whatever they chose to major in, and any post graduate work.

Continually buy all basses available everywhere and then sell them back to you guys for twice as much, unless I like you (not likely).

Help out some friends, buy a nice beach house in Mexico, another one in LA (3-4 bedrooms) buy around 10 nice basses and give those away here on TB.

1. Get rid of all debt. This is currently at ~$282K or so, so not a lot.
2. No charity outside of a nominal sum to immediate family members. For example - I would give enough so they were not uncomfortable, but would still have to work for their income / their own luxuries.
3. R&D funding - there are thousands of small businesses across the country that have great ideas. I would either fund them (with an agreement to cash in on the proceeds once products were commercialized), or simply buy the companies directly.
4. Systematically find *the best bass ever*. With that kind of money, I could hire a backing band with which to test them, rent a warehouse, and just have vendors bring the basses directly to me (with proper setups and intonation, of course).
5. Set up a Bass R&D Lab, including more objective testing of bass components. Could be part of item #5.
6. Buy a ton of property either for my own use, my family's, or for selling it later.

I fixed that for you. And I'm giving the US government a lot of leeway here. The ratio may be waayyyyy more tilted towards waste.
It's an interesting subject. Probably this:

Buy a vacation home in Maui, build a new house, cars, all that stuff.
Set up a fund for home schooling our kids. My wife and I both have education degrees. We would "home" school them by visiting historical places, world travel, etc.
Spend a little foolishly - party for friends, etc.
Use some for charity, etc.
Leave the rest in a rainy day fund.

- Buy a bigger house for the DB I've always wanted to buy but can't fit in my present house.
- Finish paying for the kids' college
- Buy them and my parents homes.
- Indulge my passions for very fast cars, very fast motorcycles, very fast airplanes and very slow boats.
- Travel, travel, travel.
- Go back to school and get a bunch of degrees in subjects that interest me but are completely useless for supporting a family.
- Endow a chair at my alma mater
- Give a ton to my favorite charities
