Whatever, I don't even like bass.
Hey I think it's great. But they sure didn't know how the hell to record it back then.

What makes you think 80s thrash bands would have a ton of bass players as fans?
i was only assuming most people on this thread probably play bass

I don't think you're picking up what I'm putting down.
Oh c'mon. Lars Ulrich sucks nowadays and it's not just his lack of ability but his attitude that it is beneath him to actually practice...however, you can't deny his influence by his recorded work in the 80's, especially Justice.
His playing on that, to a LOT of people, was drastically different than what they were used to hearing. His fills and use of double bass in odd places was HIGHLY influential, and he was GOOD at it then. Were there "better" drummers? Absolutely. Were there faster? Crazier? Tastier? Sure. To all of those...but to state that Lar's RECORDINGS were the "worst" is being ignorant. His recordings back then were AMAZINGLY influential...if not for the playing alone, but also for his DRUM SOUND.
A) Lars has a horrible snare.
B) Lars has crappy timing.
C) I can barely listen to Justice for two reasons: Lars and Jason. Lars because of A, B and the fact that every time I listen to the album I hear mistake after mistake (at least I hope they were mistakes), and Jason because of his non-existence.
D) Though people may have been after his kick tone, that doesn't make him an influential player, or anyone to list as an idol. He still sucks in the important areas, like timing. He's never really been "GOOD at it"; always very mediocre for a famous player.
E) I understand that you're a massive Metallica fan, as you've shown here quite clearly, but Lars still sucks. James is great, Cliff was amazing, Kirk is okay (not great), but Lars is just terrible. Mustaine is also great, Marty Friedman is ridiculously great, Ellefson is very good and Nick Menza is light years beyond Lars. This will always stand true.
Props to Metallica, however, in being as good as they were with a couple mediocre musicians. It takes skill to mask that and stay on top of the game to even real metalheads.
No, you've missed the point. I'm absolutely NOT a "massive Metallica fan." I hate EVERYTHING after Justice, and get bored quickly with that album. I find Kill Em All is ridiculously juvenile and strangely un-heavy nowadays, and Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are drenched in a bit too much reverb that it makes them difficult to listen to nowadays.
Yes, Lars' snare sound sucks nowadays and his overall sound is weak and deflated. Yes, his timing is always off...but it's not bad on Justice. Regarding Justice, I've heard the version with Jason turned up, and I can clearly see why they turned him DOWN. He is horribly sloppy and completely lacks nuance. His tone sounds like a weedeater ripping through a chain link fence. He destroyed the tight rhythm guitar on that album...so they turned him down. Good choice. VERY good choice.
Yes, Lars sucks now...Kirk plays like he has had multiple strokes and has 4 broken fingers. James is useless as a singer and a frontman nowadays; his rhythm guitar can still be OK. But watching them live now is like watching a car rust in Nebraska.
Again, you missed the entire point of my post...which was to point out that Lars, at the time of release back in the 80's, was HUGELY influential back then for the reasons I listed in my above post. And, while I HATE those clicking bass drums, at the time, EVERYONE wanted to have that sound. That's called being an INFLUENCE. I didn't say I was a huge Metallica fan, but I was around gigging in bands then, and there is NO DOUBT the little douche's influence on the scene then, before he totally went to ****.
Pay attention next time, please.
