Mesa 200 Buster club

I run a P bass and crank the pre and it distorts. It isn't all that hot of a signal.
I know I can crank the pre which I do but I was just wondering what tubes you guys use and like/don't like. I've read stuff about using like a 12at7 in v3 to reduce the gain or something. Has anyone ever tried something like that?

True, you can crank it. but if you feed it a hot/boosted signal, you get a wider range of distorted tones up and down the dial.
Club member checking in. I have the wedge, and it is indeed awkward to move. However, it sounds amazing and since I don't need to take it anywhere right now I'm loving it. Great clean sounds and I'm enjoying using a Bottle Rocket in front for OD.
I have been following this forum for a number of years now. I picked up a Buster 210 wedge and I love it. I want to join the club but I don't know how. Please help!

Hey guys i have been looking into these amps for a while now and recently got the urge to go all Tube amp about 3 months ago when i moved to a new area and had to give up my amp i was borrowing from my previous drummer.....
anyway i have read almost all 12 pages of this forum over the past few hours as im looking into purchasing one of these soon. Probably just the Head.
my questions for anyone willing to give insight.
How does the Buster respond with Active Basses? I play a Musicman Bongo (HH) 4 string with the 18V
also does anyone Run this amp without a cab? i read that there is a speaker mute where you can just use the DI and not run through a Cab
is that only on the Models that were originally combos?
these are my 2 main concerns after i get some replies i will have no problems with pulling the trigger on the next deal i find

can't say anything about active basses. however, i have done recording with no cab attached. take a read through the manual (still on the Mesa page) and it will tell you how it works. http://www.mesaboogie.com/manuals/Buster Bass 200.pdf
like many Mesa products, I've found that leaving a speaker attached, even when going "silently" direct, sound will still bleed through that speaker. i don't do lots of direct recording, but i've done it with my Buster and not had an issue yet.
I've never played buster with an active bass, but I see no reason why it wouldn't be great. You might have to keep the gain a little lower than with a passive bass, but no problem. Crank the master, and use your gain to adjust volume. Or just listen for clipping in the gain stage... unless that's your sound, in which case crank away. The Buster has a pleasant break up in the gain stage.
As for the speaker question, yes, you can run without a cab. From the Buster manual linked to above...
The speaker mute defeats the signal to the driver stage, thereby protecting the output transformer from
damage when there is no load connected to the speaker outputs. Even with this safeguard it is still a wise idea to keep the speakers, or a load of some kind ( such as a load resistor ) connected at all times to avoid accidental
damage to your amplifiers’ output transformer.
Just be careful that you don't get things mixed up and power on with the mute defeated and no speakers. The Manual linked to above is a good read as far as manuals go, and very helpful in understanding how the buster works. Great amp choice!

Can anyone in here recommend some speakers for my Buster 2x10? I had an accident with my power drill falling from a precarious perch and the bit tore a hole through one speaker. Just in case it's not repairable or reconing is too expensive, what speakers would work well in a Buster?
I suggest asking Mesa for their advice. Alternately, you could try to find a speaker from a wedge combo whose amp has been rehoused into a head.
I know the stock speaker is an EV, likely 16 ohms and about 150-200 watts. I don't think they were any different than what was in the old Mesa Diesel cabs at the time in the late 90s. If you want to hunt down a direct replacement, that is.
Anybody ever run a Buster through an ampeg 8x10 fridge cabinet? How'd it sound? Anything I should expect or keep in mind? I've got an audition coming up and I'm trying to decide if I need to bring my cabinet or just the head. (I could also use the SVT head, but...)

So do I. Doubt it has quite the balls of the SVT head but I don't need that much power anyway.
Anyone run a 4ohm cab with the 210 buster combo to make a stack I have a hlf 410 and if I pick this combo up today I'd like to run it like a 610 stack
Y'all correct me if I'm wrong but I think that running a 4 ohm external 4x10 cab with the built-in 8 ohm 2x10 cab would drop the power burden to 2.6 ohms, which I don't think the Buster is designed to put out. You could always call Mesa on Monday (they're not typically in on Saturdays) and see what they have to say.
its a little unconventional but if you wanted to use
two external 4 ohm 2x10 cabs
you could daisy chain those 2 external cabs out of one of the 4 ohm outputs on the amp
then just move the internal connection from the 8 ohm output over to the other 4 ohm output
you would be using technically 3 cabs but its just 2 loads....
hope this makes sense to anyone else let me know if it helps

my bad i didnt read your first post well enough
didnt realize you already owned the 410 cab...
yeah you would be running into the issue of a 2.7 ohm load that way unless you ran the internal cab in series off the external cab using the 8 ohm output but it would rob your overall wattage due to a 12 ohm load
