I think this counts

I don't get it, though.... how come a company that adverstised itself to be such a highball, top-end company back in the 80's and 90's made such ugly gear? It sounds and performs incredibly well, but it's just downright repulsive looking!

I say this because I nearly bought a couple of 90's Roadready cabs, a 2x10 and 1x15. They sounded good, but A) I don't believe in a 70-pound 2x10, and B) They're an eyesore!

I don't think the newer gear is bad-looking at all, in fact, its pretty classy! I'd love to hear any other opinions on Mesa's old aesthetic choices....

And to TaySte- That's got to be loud as hell! I really like the old-school all-tube Mesa racks.

for those of you who run a 400+ in a rack, what speed do you put the fan on? Is it better to have it on a higher setting? Or just the lowest? I'm picking one up today or tomorrow, so i wanted to know what I should be expecting!
I guess it would depend on the type of rack. I currently have mine housed in a SKB rack that has a hole in the side of the rack for venting so I keep it on the low setting. It never gets hot.

Thanks and maybe they figured it would be so loud you wouldn't be able to get close enough to see it :p

To me alot of the 80's-90's Mesa stuff looks designed for function just as tough as they could make it

I leave it on high if you can hear the fan when you are playing you don't need the power of a 400+ ;)

They stay pretty cool for tube amps and the fan is quiet even on high.

To each his own: I like the way the Road Ready stuff looks. It also accomplishes the same end goal as a seperate road case, without adding 100% of that weight...so, if you're a road case kinda guy, it's a weight savings...
(I'm not btw, and prefer the older diesel series cabs)

side note:
If anyone here has an older diesel 210 laying around they're not using, please pm me...

thx-alan

KT-88's, here, but I have had mine modded to allow for manual adjustment of bias.

Although you added bias adjustment pots, did you have to change the screen resistors to make it work with the KT-88's? My 400 is a very, very late one from June of 1989 and still has the original 6L6's in it, which work fine. On a funny note, my 400 is so late that it actually has 2-ohm taps on the back, like a 400+

I'll have to check with my amp tech.

I thought I had a late one... Mine is from '87 (serial nr B566)
I assumed the Bass 400 was replaced by the Bass 400+ (that was introduced in '87 if I'm correct.)

btw I've tried my amp with Mesa 6L6's in it (STR420), sounded pretty much the same.
The Bass 400 (not the 400+ !) can run on 6550 tubes within Mesa specs without modification/adjustments, the first half of the production run came standard with 6550 tubes (until Mesa ran out of them)
